Engines don't jump time when they are not running.

Rotor will point to number 1 plug wire with every other rotation of the crank.

Get an auto repair manual to confirm you have plug wires in right order on distributor cap.

Also suggest finding Factory Service Manuals at library to get troubleshooting charts and diagnostics.

SOURCE: 1991 Olds Bravada 4.3 v6 rough idle and backfiring.

Ok guys, let's fix these things here!
Just went through this myself, so do the following:
Go to your local parts store and buy a Haynes Repair Manual.
You need to read the book first, learn how the ECM (Electronic Control Module) works. You'll see that there are alot of sensors and components that make up the fuel emissions bologna.
The nice thing about this system is not only does the ECM control all electrical functions, it also trouble-shoots it's self. When a component or sensor goes out, the ECM stores a code for that event in it's memory. You can use the Haynes Repair Manual to put the ECM into diagnostic mode and thus read any codes present.
So, all that's left is replacing what the EMC tells you too! :) Good Luck!

SOURCE: 1988 Chevrolet K3500, Have replaced distributor,

Pick up a spark tester (it'll cost under 15$) . After installing the tester on one of the 2 rear right or left bank spark plugs, have someone turn the engine over and check for spark. If you have no spark, you could have either a broken timing chain or a broken cam-shaft. The only other minor item you didn't mention with regard to the ignition system was to make sure you have a good hot power source to your distributor. If these things don't work, it might be time to check that the carburetor or throttle body fuel injection (as applicable) is providing fuel.

I have a 1985 c4 corvette that backfire underload

Check for a blockage in the exhaust system, if OK check ignition timing as low grade fuel can be a cause.

Tune up 1988 Lincoln Towncar

you need: spark plugs, spark plug wires, depending on if newer system that is all. if it is older you will also need rotor cap and rotor button. label the plug wires and change one plug and corosponding wire at a time after changing the (cap and button).make shure the plug wires go on the new cap in the same order that they came off.

Rough idle 95 astro van, I did a full tune up , plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, and fuel filter and cleaned egr vavle.

I actually had to replace my EGR valve and the gasket. I clean the valve well and reused both. I don't think the gasket sealed well enough though. So I went ahead and got a new valve, gasket and changed them. It runs a lot smoother now.

1988 GMC pickup 4x4 350 engine its hard starting and will not idle i gave it a full tune up even a new fuel filter ive checked and changed all sencors on the motor

Do a compression test. The pistons and rings may not seal enough anymore. Try push-starting it in 2nd gear. When you push it ,it will turn the engine faster and build up more compression, enabling combustion to take place. Aslso check if the fuel pressure regulator is not leaking through the vacuum hose, causing it to flood.

1988 chevrolet 350hp when you start off it cut off and on sometime backfire though the carb.

Do a major tune up,with air filter and fuel filter, cap and rotor ,and spark plugs, and maybe a pcv valve. This is most likely the problem,if not, then the distributor,or slack in the timing chain ,or ,a valve adjustment would be the cause,if this was helpful, please rate, thank you.

Engine running rough at all speeds. With air cleaner of i can hear it backfireing when i raise the engine speed. Has good compression avreage 152 psi. Cap and rotor should be replace and the plugs are all...

Timing, timing, timing. Usually, backfires, pings, funky acceleration and "dieseling" are all traced to ignition timing. In truth, a 4.3 is just a 5.7 with the back two holes cut off, so there's not a whole lot to mess with (unless it's MPFI, not TBI.... if it's the "Spider" injection system, God be with you.) Seriously though, perform a major tuneup, including plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel filter, and just for good measure, air filter. If the wires are cross-firing, or even just arching, that's a huge problem. Also, look at the plugs when you get them out - those are the best way to see how your engine is running. Just a yellowish/brownish discoloration generally means you're good. White means you're running lean. Black and that cylinder has been running rich. If you find a plug with a lot of carbon and/or black coloration, check that cylinder's ignition wire. Probably been arching out.

Lastly, don't be cheap. Get the best wires you can afford. Going with economy, "green box" wires would be like doing nothing at all. When I was a wrench, customers would come in after giving their vehicles a tune up, and the new, cheap wires were as bad as the old ones. At night, under the hood, they literally arched so bad they looked like a strand of Christmas lights. And, MAKE SURE TO KNOW THE FIRING ORDER!!!!! Easiest way to do a wire change? One at a time. After that's all done, and if the problem persists, check the timing. In fact, check it, or have it checked, anyway.

Good luck!

1982 el camino 305 4 brl has just developed backfiring @ carb , ran great after tune up but still had backfire @high speed . It now backfires @ low speed. Could it be timing belt? \ 131,000 miles w/ 400...

the timing maybe off but it could be a miss adjusted carb. there is no timing belt it is a chau=in and that is most likely not the problem. timing is corrected at the distubtor. but i would check the carb it may be dupming to much fuel
