Buick Century 2000 gear shifter moves freely will not start

Sounds like your shift cable came unhooked or just plain Broke, it hooks to shifter and hooks to transmission, If it moves freely I would say it's Broken, and that is why car won't start cause it is still in drive

Gear shift stuck in park on a 2001 gran am. howdo

It is probably not the shift linkage causing your concern. All modern vehicles have a feature called Shift Interlock. It doesn't allow the shifter on automatic equipped vehicles to be moved from park without the key in the ignition and the brake applied. There should be a bypass that will allow you to atleast drive the car for the time being. Check your owners manual to find where it is. It's usually around the shifter. The most common cause for this problem are the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid.

1997 pontiac sunfire manual transmission won't shift out of gear.

What you can try is to remove the shift cables from the transmission side. then move the shifter and see if everything is free if it's still sticks then the cables are going to be replaced. if everything is moving with the cable off. then you need to remove the shift tower on the tranny (where the shift cable is I belive it's 5 bolts) remove the tower and you will see the shift pin. Inside the tower there is a cotter pin that breaks and that will cause you to have one gear and unable to selected another gear. If you are not mech inclined I would no attemped the shift tower repaire, the cables do it will save you money. The shift tower has bushings that can fall into the tranny.

Shifter stuck and key will not come out of ignition

yes, there is a light and they may have just forgotten to plug it back in, it should be accessible from the small compartment next to the gear shift, if not, remove the surrounding console and you should be able to find it. there should be 2 lights in there. 1 for the small compartment and another for the gear shift. if it is plugged in check the globe to see if its blown. as for the "little shift interlock mechanism" i would suggest taking it back to the shop and asking them to make sure everything was fastened and tell them you can hear it rattling around. you never know, it may be the wires and plug for your gear shift light.
