I have a 1998 Polo 1.8i. when I start the car the idling go's to almost 2000rpm and when shut it off, it struggles to restart again and I can smell petrol fumes as I try to start it. When it does start again and when I drive it stays on high (2000+) reve and when going down hill I take it of gear the reve is always high then suddenly drops to below 1000rpm - I am confused 'cause diferrent guys tell me different things like, replace the throttle body, replace the airflow meter (this model does not have a airflow meter etc etc - whats my solution ?

Try cleaning the throttle plate or first check an see if it is gummed up ! This could cause an intermittent fast idle .

run fault codes and look for faults in idle sensor---MAF sensor

The dash lights are powered by the battery through the ignition switch via a fuse. Check the electric connections and conditions of the wires.

Change the transmission fluid to solve transmission issues. Original fluid is always preferable as it is specifically designed for the transmission.

There is no idle speed control vale if it is Bosch mono motronic. idle speed is controlled by throttle actuator, ( electric motor) that is on the left hand side of the throttle body.

try spraying the linkage on the side of the carburator with some kind of lubricate W-D 40 works well or check the strenghth of your spring that
