SOURCE: charger won't shift out of park ...park lock

http://www.custombilletstore.com/product_p/1028.htm I know this is late but I had the same problem. The release wouldn't work either. I had to remove the shifter and take the cover off. A spring broke off the pink lever in the front of the shifter. The shifter would move side to side but couldn't be pulled back. The above link sells a replacement part that might work. Thanks to petevpi.

Stuck in park will not shift

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
?€¢
The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.

?€¢
The automatic transmission shift lock control switch.

?€¢
The park/neutral position switch.

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the park/neutral position switch. When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.

Shifter on my 2006 dodge charger is stuck in park cant move at all in either direction

If your car has "shift lock" which unlocks the shifter when the brake pedal is depressed and you are doing so, but does not unlock the shifter try this...
Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brakes lights and shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push the switches with your finger. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector.

My 2006 charger is stuck in park in the driveway

Try rocking the car back and forth while trying to shift out of park.
Some cars need the brake pedal pressed to shift as well...

Had a caravan once and if it was placed in park and it rolled slightly, it would put pressure on the trans...locking it up to where I couldn't shift out of park.

Hope this helps...

I have a 2009 dodge charger and my gear shift wont move out of park

There is a safety latch that requires you to depress the brake to shift out of park. Your owners manual should show a way to "bypass" this untill you can get it fixed. I seem to recall a plastic latch wears out, or something like it.

I can't move my dodge charger out of park, why?

I expect the car has a brake safety switch which only allows the tranny to be shifted in to gear when the brake is applied. If this is not happening I expect either the switch or the solenoid it activates has failed.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

I cannot get the gear to shift down

check the brake lights, the shifter has a safety feature that will not allow u to shift out of park if your foot is not on the brake and the brake lights are working, if the brake lights are working there is a bypass to get it out of park under a little cover next to the shift handle.

the shiter interlock has broken at the shifter...pull the cover from the shifter and locate the then wire at the front left side of the assembly...start the vehicle...apply foot brake,,,push rearward on the plastic piece the cable attaches to at th shifter...and pull into gear.
this not a repair...the only true fix is to replace the shifter assembly
