Most likely biger then just fluid and filter, but that is a good start, also put a can of transX in the transmission when you refill it ( its like magic juce in a can ) it will take around 100 miles or so before the transX starts to work if the problem has not gone away within 200 miles then i would start looking a little deaper then just a transmission service, when you remove the oil pan from the transmission you will find a magnet in the bottom of the pan this magnet can tell you a lot about the condition of the transmission, all automatic transmissions make some small grindings and the magnet is there to catch them so they dont get stuck in the transmission valve body, if there is more than a tee spoon of grindings or you find brass in the pan then you need a transmission if only a small amount of grindings then you might get lucky with the transmission service....also if you find any rubber in the pan this is one of the apply seals inside the transmission and is bad news, if you find rubber then you need to find a transmission........good luck.

Change of fluid and filter helps. The condition of the old oil will tell you weather there might be more damage. Debris on the oil may also be found in the transmission solenoid which controls the fluid which engages the gears. Your solenoid may be dirty or damaged. It is also possible that the valves for the 3rd gear is dirty that is why you are staying on the 2nd gear. These two components needs to be inspected further by opening the transmission.
