Trying to recharge the a/c on my '92 deville...the new can doesn't seem to want to fit on the a/c under the hood...it is R-134a..Any suggestions or did we just get a defunct can???

the 1987 caddy has an R12 A/C system what you bought is a 134A kit, you have to have a licenes to by R12, you can do a convert on the system go back to the parts stor and tell them you need a retro fit kit.

the recharge kit will only fit on the low side fitting which is the smaller fitting on the larger lines/hoses. If it doesn't fit on the fitting you have tried than you are probably trying to put it on the high side fitting which is the larger fitting on the smaller lines/hoses. I think the low side fitting is on the receiver drier on this model which is the canister looking thing back by the passenger side of the firewall.

follow the lines from the compressor each line should have a fitting with a screw on cap the hose you bought with the R134 should only fit the low pressure side just make sure you got the hose with a gauge.

Just get an R134a recharge kit, and follow the instructions.

The kit contains canisters of oil and R134a and a hose with a gauge on it.

Add about 2 or 3 cans of refrigerant on a system where the refrigerant leaked out.

One may also want to add leak sealer. which comes in a can like the pure 134a.

either the refridgerent charge is low OR the expansion valve for the rear a/c is bad. I would evacuate the system and recharge it with the right amount FIRST before trying to diagnose another problem. should be a decal under the hood for correct amount of 134a

The low pressure port on the 2003 grand am is actually behind the engine, near the firewall on the passenger side. Good luck getting your hose down there though, I ended up buying an extension hose.

either a blown fuse or the freon is low, also a bad sensor could cause it unsure if it is r-12 or 134a. should have a sticker under the hood. if it uses r12 then it probally will have to go in for service.

I'm not sure if the system on that car is 134a or R12. There should be a decal under the hood that will tell you which one you are currently running, or on the compressor if it is easily visible. If it is an r12 system, you will have to buy a retrofit kit that converts the charge fittings to take 134a, as they are different size fittings.

You didnt actually post a question so I will try to help. You need 134a refrigerant and a way to get it into the system. Places like walmart and Advance Auto Parts has what you need. Most diy kits have a hose to connect to the Low Pressure side of the ac system and a guage. The other end of the guage has a connector that fits on the can of 134a. Start the car, turn the ac on high, open the hood. Being careful of moving parts under the hood, connect the hose to the Low Pressure side of the ac and see where the guage is reading. Most are color coded. If it says it needs charged, squeeze the trigger until the can is empty and take another reading. Continue until the guage is in normal range.

go to auto zone and buy a 134 recharge kit follow the directions on the box, you will need to find to LOW side service port there are two ports with plastic caps on the ac lines you are looking for the one that is attached to a larger diameter ac line. the kit will ONLY FIT ON THIS FITTING so you dont have to worry, there is a label under the hood somewhere thats green and says how much 134a you should install be carefull wear safety googles and good luck, please rate -jeff
