Hi Rockzone, Set the the engine to Top Dead Center before removing the old belt. If you've already removed it with the timing in any other position, do the following:- Rotate the camshaft so that the drill hole through the gear, is opposite a punch match mark behind it. (The punch mark is on the front of the camshaft cap). It is advisable to use a bright light and a mirror, which you hold at an angle in front of the camshaft drive gear. Shine the light between the gear and the cylinder head. Rotate the cam until the hole aligns with the punch mark. Once aligned, then rotate the crankshaft until the 'V' cut out on the crankshaft gear aligns with the match mark arrow on the front of the oil pump housing. Make sure that the tensioner bearing is at the maximum loose setting, fit the belt. Gently release the tensioner bearing and then recheck the timing. ( Adjust if required). When correct, tighten the lock nut on the tensioner bearing. Rotate the engine, turning it with a socket spanner from the crank shaft two full revolutions, and then recheck mark alignment. When the marks align after rotation, fit back everything else. Regards Johngee10

My 87 toyota camry wont start has spark and fuel but turns over

does it have the 4 cylinder engine? if yes you could have broken timing belt witch opens and closes intake and exhaust valves. same for V6 engines.the belt must be replaced and engine crank and cam shafts retimed with new belt istallation. one to tell is when cranking the engine turns over kinda fast.

Cant get no. 1 piston top dead center with the timing belt

Ive replaced the head gasket two times (two cars) with this engine, and had a little trouble with this. The mark on the intake camshaft that matches the mark where it connects to the distributer is tricky. The mark on the distributer connection is not supposed to match up square with the mark on the camshaft, if you do match them completely, then the teeth wont match up with the timing belt completely (#1 piston position) instead, the mark shows you which flat surface to allign if that makes since. The notch (dist side) is on a flat hex surface, it is not in the middle of the surface but it should be. as long as the two pieces hex sides are lined up, you should then be able to get good timing with the #1 position after turning the crankshaft to get the timing belt to line up. its hard to explain but all markings are right for the timing belt, but the distributer notch to line up the cams for timing is a little off. match the two surfaces (notch should me a few mm to the right of the other mark) Ive done this on 2 toyotas (87 celica and 89 camry) and they both work fine now. Hope this helps.

2001 Toyota camry 2.2 L 4 cyl engine timming belt replacement

The 2001 Camry 2.2 has a timing belt.
Recommended change interval is 90,000 miles.
There is no good reason for putting the replacement off, as the belt may be stretched slightly when it nears the rec replace interval, and your mileage may suffer because the engine is not in proper "time".
If the belt jumps time or breaks, it will NOT damage the valves.
