The ABS carries out a self-test when the ignition is switched on and if no fault exists the light will go out in less than a minute. If the light stays on it means the system has a fault.
The sort of fault that switches on the light has little to do with the condition of the brakes but has a great deal to do with the sensors, the wiring, the pump and modulator and the ECU. A code read is needed to help with the diagnostic process.
A common fault is the ABS wheel speed sensors that suffer from damaged wires or corrosion of the housing can build and squeeze the sensor until the plastic cracks and allows water ingress.
The earlier variable reluctance type generates a signal as the wheel rotates and can be tested with a multimeter but the later type works on a different principle and testing is beyond the scope of the home mechanic.

Your Airbag system is monitored by your vehicle's on-board diagnostic (OBDII) system. Although you may not see any visible defect, the system has identified a possible electrical or sensor fault and will have stored the appropriate fault code/s in its memory.
As your Airbag system is a critical safety feature, you will need to have these codes extracted by your local BMW dealership. The codes will immediately identify which component is at fault.
Hi Reba. There are a few sensors that can fail or need to be adjusted. A BMW repair shop should be able to diagnose the convertible top and get a fault indicating which sensor is acting up. The most common sensor failure is the rotation angle sensor on the driver side near the left rear corner at the convertible top hinge.
Hi , you will need to get the fault memory checked , and you will proably find that you have a rear left speed sensor fault, this sensor sends the signal for the speedometer to work , regards mark
BMW engine light Comes on if DME engine management system self diagnostic fault detected. Will stay on until codes are called up and memory erased. With OBDread the code as follows. Turn on ignition key, press accelerator pedal to the floor five times within 5 seconds. The check engine light will remain on for 5 sec , blik off, come on for 2,5 sec, go off for 2,5 sec and fault code will begin to flash. If more than one fault exist 2nd fault code will be separated by 2,5 sec pause. after fault codes there will be a 0.5 sec flash and light will remain off. to read codes again do procedure again. Canceling of codes. make sure fault code is present (short blink and light goes out for long period), depress throttle pedal for at least 10 sec. read fault codes again and check for code 1444 (no faults stored.) Check also the following, fuel pump, oxygen sensor, fuel injectors, engine coolant temp sensor, idle speed control valve, mass airflow sensor and too many other things.
Unfortunately there are several possibilities that are common to causing the light to come on. I would suggest taking the car in to a dealer and having them read out the fault memory. Such possibilities are a failed speed sensor, a binding DSC/ACS actuator cable, or faulty DCS/ASC control unit. If you know how, you can disconnect the speed sensors, and check for voltage output across the the terminals inside the connector going to the speed sensor while rotating the wheel. A dealer should charge you about an 1hour fee to check out your system. Due to the cost of parts involved, I would recommend having it checked before just guessing.
