Hello. Great website here. I have a merc s320 cdi, 2006, w221 model. It has just done 120k miles. When driving high speed around 70-80mph, it will slowly start to lose power, this will kick in and out. Unfortunately I had a major transmission failure and have just had it professionally rebuilt, but the car has come back and the loss of power issue is happening on/off all the time now, it suddenly drops in/out and gives turbo surge. No lights on dash, car not in limp mode. No leaks visible when parked. Kick down when it works is very brash and it gears **** into low gears when braking. Everything else is tip top, no other issues, car is back with mechanic, to find out fault codes if any, but I think it's a needle in a haystack job.. Please help!

First of all you need to access the Engine Control Module (ECM) using suitable diagnostic equipment (Star, Bosch KTS, Texa, ...) connected to the data link connector of the car, in order to pull out all DTC's memored. DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code. Then you will bu full informed about the root cause of the problem, and you will be able to repair & replace bad pieces and reset the ECM.
Let me know please about found DTC codes.
I guess that in your case the turbocharger is responsible for engine losing power.
I had some cars like Mercedes-Banz, BMW, Audi, VW, ... with Diesel Turbo Intercooled engines which slowly start to lose power. The root cause of the problem was bad turbocharger.

Turbocharger checking & reparation instructions:
1. Engine stopped and ignition switch off. Check all pneumatic connections and hoses between turbocharger actuator = pressure unit for boost-pressure control, boost-pressure control solenoid valve, vacuum reservoir, EGR control solenoid valve, intake-manifold flap solenoid valve, EGR valve with throttle - part of intake manifold. Also the vacuum connection between tandem pump and brake booster. If you find something wrong replace parts. If not go to step 2.
2. Extract the hose of the turbocharger actuator = pressure unit for boost-pressure control part of turbocharger. Instead of the original hose you must place another 1 meter long hose with the same inside diameter, and then you check to inspire yourself the air from the other one extremity of this hose. The mechanical connecting rod of the turbocharger actuator must have a smooth and whole motion. If you can do that with your mouth, then you must replace the boost-pressure control solenoid valve. If you can not reach this with your mouth, then you go to step 3.
3. This is the most difficult work. The problem is that the soot particles deposits inside the turbocharger plugging the variable nozzle geometry mechanism = adjustable vanes of the turbine. If the turbocharger actuator is not able to adjust the turbine vanes the charge air pressure increase too much and ECU (engine control unit) go in "limp mode" = engine protection software. As a result the "limp home" mode engine still running until you turn the engine off (ignition switch off) and back on when the "limp mode" is deactivated, but the fault still remain in ECU memory!
4. You must be able to extract the turbo from the engine and then to disassemble the turbocharger, clean inside adjustable vanes mechanism and refit all.

2006/07 Kia Sedona 2.9 CDI auto diesel. All 4 wheels get hot after 5 miles. I have been into the main dealership, still doing the same. Help.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

It is an automatic? Do you drive STRICTLY with one foot? Left foot firmly rested on the floor. I saw a lady once that drove with right foot on the accelerator and left foot on the brake. It sounds like your brakes are lightly on all the time. If the vehicle is in Neutral, can you push it to move it? If not the brakes are binding and you need to find out why?

Make sure the two Factory Recalls have been done?

It appears to be a known issue.

When you reconnect battery how much time does it take for cpu to program itself ?

All makes & models are different. You have to drive the car at several miles high speed, than several miles low speed & repeat the process. That usually covers most vehicle. But just drive normally at high & low speeds and soon enough you'll be good to go. Does not do the clock & radio for you. That your on your own.

Truck works fine in R, 1, and 2 nothing in 3 or D. 2006 Silverado V-6 automatic 1/2 ton

Hey Anon, Yes, drive it to the tranny shop..plan to leave it... sounds like you are in for a rebuild.. this is typical for GM RWD transmissions.. I have seen TOO many do this same thing,, (I have had TWO in for this... vehicles I inherited that were not maintained)..GM transmissions on RWD's must have the fluid and filter changed every 50K - 75K and a complete fluid exchange and filter replacement every 120K -150K MINIMUM for them to last..usually cost around $1200 - $1400.. sorry.. Good luck!

I have a 2006 F-450 4X4 W/6.0 powerstroke has 19000 miles runs fine pulling around around farm or just driving truck have 35 foot trailer hauling 5093 john deere on freeway hard pull high speed has wrench...

I am thinking that you have a low coolant level in the radiator or blocked core fins on the radiator. The wrench symbol indicates a engine problem and the loss of power would be the limp home mode clicking in to prevent damage to the engine. I suggest you have a coolant system pressure test done to check for leaks and have a flow test done on the radiator to check for blocked cores. Driving around the farm is not stress full enough to demand a good coolant system but the added stress of heavy load high speed on the highway reveals problems in the coolant system /radiator areas.

I have 2001 Merc 430ML what is the Low Range botton mean?

low range means you are in 'low range 4 wheel drive' push the button while the engines running and the gear shift levers in neutral to switch to high range [or 2x4] low range, cannot drive over 15 miles per hour, high range can drive up to 65 miles per hour. see the difference? you need to shift the transmission to neutral, while the engines running, and your foot on the brake pedal, push the button on the 4x4 to light up to the two wheel or rear wheel diagram. then when it lights up the 2 rear wheels, it's in rear wheel drive. if this does'nt describe your problem! please do not attempt anything and call toll free# for mercedes roadside assistance for free at 1-877-815-9962 these people have been a great asset to my buisness. thank you for choosing fixya.com

Turning off brake pad warning light after changing pads on S320 merc.

Hi,
If the light came on before you changed pads, you will need to replace the sensor.
The sensor consists of only a wire link embedded in a hard plastic. This is worn through when the pads are nearly worn out.

To check which sensor it is, it's easier to unplug the sensor, and check with a continuity checker. If there is no continuity, you need to replace it.

Thanks for using Fixya! If this solves the problem, please rate as such. Thank you.
