My 1991 non-turbo Mercury Capri started fine last night but while idling, the Air Bag light began to flash and the Battery light came on. Not wanting to travel I turned off the ignition switch. Immediately I attempted to restart but nothing... no engine turnover, no clicks, no idiot lights on the dash, nothing. Turned on the headlights which opened and were of normal brightness. Turned the key to start and still nothing. The headlights did not dim at all during this attempt. Car's been dependable otherwise.

Charge the battery and once fully charged, do a LOAD test on it, clean all the connections and start the car ,, check the voltage at the battery posts with the car running, you should get between 13.5 and 14.5 volts, if not, replace the alternator , if you do, the battery and the cables just needed some attention

Removing an alternator from a 1991 Mercury free xr2 turbo

Disconnect the battery so you don't melt your fingers. Remove the belt by relieving the pressure at the belt tensioner. Remove the alternator wiring harness and the two or 3 long bolts that hold the alternator on. Swap for the new alternator and put it all back together.

Long story short i replaced the battery on my 1991 capri (turbo) and i put the positive on the negative and the neg on the pos.

I am afraid that you smoked some stuff. If you are very lucky, you may be able to get by with replacing a fuse or 2. However there may be damage to several components, including the engine control module.

The first thing to check is for blown fuses in the main fuse panel located next to the battery on the left strut tower. (See picture)

Where is my IAT sensor located? Its a 1992 Mercury Capri non Turbo. I bought a Performance module and its splices into the two IAT wires. Is

Save your money and don't attach the module, it does not work. It only works during idle and after that the O2 and MAP sensors take over to control the air fuel ratio and timing. Take note that if there is a conflict with the program to your ecm's parameters, your engine will run under limp mode default which would result in less HP and performance. Good luck and if you need ore performance just spend the extra to have your car Dyno Turned.

New Battery Installation (Problems)

I would remove the battery and give it a good charge. New batterys require a low amp over night charge. A cars altenator isn't designed to charge a battery it's made to maintain the battery to it's fullest ability. The headlights opening and closing would indicate to me a low voltage, causing the relays for the headlights not to fully shut or open. Let me know if this solves your issue, if not we can trouble shoot farther. Thank you for using fixya.com
