Question about 1990 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

TOYOTA fuel and temperature gauge

Recently fuel gauge and temperature gauge both stopped working (at same time) on my 1990 Corolla. fuel gauge is stuck at half and temperature remains at 0. fuse is good and checked earth connections and sender units seem ok. So why would they both **** out together?

Some cars have a second fuse box under the hood near the battery. See if your car doesn't have one of those.

Guages not working,

If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.

Need to find the instrument panel relay

If you have the CCRM relay module which is what you need here then it is located under the plastic cover over the top of the radiator under the hood on the passengers side.

99 mustang fuel gage stuck on half, low fuel light works

If the gauge remains in one position, on or off, full or empty, then it may be a bad gauge, or a faulty voltage regulator for the gauge. If the instrument panel is removed, there is a printed circuit on the back which ties to all gauges and lights. Check it for breaks or corrosion. The voltage regulator should be mounted to the same area and supplies regulated voltage to the fuel gauge. Hope this helps!

It may be a temperature sensor. You might have two,one for the computer, and one for the light or gauge. If the one for the computer is bad, it might think it's cold, and it will dump more fuel. On some GM models, applying the throttle will reduce fuel. You will need a scanner to verify this.

Replace the thermostat with one rated to around 190 degrees or as close to that that you can find,if that does'nt work you need a temperature senser.

1990 toyota corolla, fuel/temperature gauges not working.

If you are handy with small hand tools and a Volt/Ohm meter then it would be worth a try to check the problem, older cards the fuel guage is problematic. In the tank in a wire wound resistor connected to the float in the tank, every time you change the fuel lever the wiper rubs the wires and over time it either breaks or gets coated with crud, it requires removing the sensor from the tank and cleaning it. To test however you can follow the wires to the tank and remove the connector, if you have a fuel pump in the tank then you will need to check the wiring diagram for the correct wires and colors. You then measure the resistance across the two wires for the sensor, open circuit means the part will require removel and repair, anything from zero to about 120 means it is probably working, you can also short the wires going back to the gauge and turn on the ignition switch but don't start the car, if it read full then remove the short and it should read empty, the gauge is working. Temp gauge same process just the sensor is under the hood, same process measure resisitance. If you are going to try this yourself I suggest a service manual from your local parts store. If you choose to then take it to a mechanic you already know what to expect. I don't suggest removing a fuel tank alone, it requires jacking up the card and having something to raise and lower the tank. You are working with flamable liquids and you can be seriously injured or killed. Take care folow instructions and you will be fine. Wish it were simpler but this is what a mechanic is going to do as well.

1990 Corolla Cooling system problems

Your temp gauge reads low on the highway, and one-half in the city?
You need to replace the thermostat. It is sticking open.
Driving at highway speeds, the blast of air that the car is cutting through enters the radiator, thusly cooling it, and the coolant inside the radiator... In town, with the lesser amount of air being forced into the radiator, (slower speeds), the coolant temperature rises. Replace the thermostat, and you will be OK.
