Hi i have a problem with a '94' model Jaguar XJS 4.0 switchable sport gearbox. When the car is started the gearbox fault light has started staying on, when this happens the gear change goes from being really smooth to very harsh, but still engages all gears. This has become more and more frequent. We have just changed the gearbox and the ECU and the problem is exactly the same, can anyone help please?

I have a Jaguar S-type and had recent repair to replace cooling system overflow box.  Still gets hot after you turn off the air.  Now I have a gearbox fault light on, wonder if this is related to cooling system .  I notice that the outside temp gage goes up after the light comes on for the gearbox.??

Sounds more like TPS (Throttle position switch) or wiring fault from it. Gearbox ecu is not getting accurate data from throttle. Is the engine starting ok and steady rev build?

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

I have been with same problem on a BMW 325i.
It is because you need to add oil. Less oil= extrem temperature!
try to add oil, better to change oil and filter.
