Transmission slips Dear Experts, My 1991 Ford F 150, 2wd automatic transmission (E40D) doesn't opertate properly after I changed the starter solenoid. It slips like the clutches are not working. Is this a coincident or did I blow a fuseable link? All the smaller wires are on the starter solenoid post with the battery cable. On the other side is the post that has the larger wire that goes to the starter itself. The truck starts and runs fine except for the transmission issue. The truck did sit for approx. eight months. Thanks for your help, Rich

I have a 91 f250 4x4 e40D transmission. Had it rebuild, then slip it in. It shifts 1 to 2 ok. But not shifting to 3rd & fourth

Being a 91, take it back. But this really depends on who you had build it. Shade tree guy, your probably going to eat it. Garage, take it back and make them fix it.

I have an 91 bronco with an automatic transmission that wont shift on its own. It will shift fine if you run it through the gears automatically, but doesn't shift when its in drive.

E40D trans they are all different and maybe you'll find it now there is 4.9 motor 5.0 5.8 and all can come with A4ld /E40D / or C6 transmission look for broken or disconnected vacuum lines or if the engine is running rough you must correct the running condition because you are loosing vacuum inches and the trans needs vacuum at a certain level to shift if the engine stutters your loosing the vacuum and it will never shift that's what this sounds like to me or that modulator needs adjustment or to be replaced later man! it's party time!

Hi Rodney, Have the vehicle scanned and diagnosed. That way you will know for sure where the problem is. I believe the problem is in the control system. Regards John

I change fluid and filter and still have poor shifting on my automatic transmission.

Sounds like the shift solenoids in valve body. Before you go nuts have it checked out by transmission shop. They have the proper tools to pressure check it and if necessary do a stall test.
AS LONG AS ITS NOT SLIPPING THEN THE REPAIR ISN'T SO STEEP. IF ITS SLIPPING THEN ITS THE CONVERTOR. (basically a rebuild job).
