I have a 1998 Ford Explorer, V8, all wheel drive. I just had new back brakes and new tires as well as new shocks put into this truck. When I got it back from all of this, then it was running rough when idling. Any ideas on what this might be. It seems like with the Air Conditioning off, it is a little bit better.

SOURCE: rough idle then stalls
Vacume leak or bad idle motor. With the car in park and running with the hood open listen for leaks moving your hand around the different hoses looking for a change in the sounds that you hear. The idel motor also makes the car idel up to 1500 RPM or so right at start-up then idel down, If it doesn;t the idel motor is likly. Check engine light is on when running? Test for codes, Follow code test charts don't skip any steps!.

Have a mechanic check your idle bypass valve, since it may be bad
or need cleaning, also, have a tune-up done, if you haven't had one in
the past 30K miles. Good luck.

Often, on the Escorts of this vintage, rough idle can be due to a leak in the vacuum system. With the engine running, listen closely for any tell-tale hissing sounds coming from any of the vacuum hoses. Check that they are all securely in place and the end-clamps are all tight. Also check that the PCV valve and the hose connecting it to the manifold are securely in place. Another possibility is the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. If it is clogged or sticking, it can cause rough idle. Refer to a service manual to diagnose the IAC valve. Other things to check: make sure that the air intake is unobstructed and clean. You might consider cleaning the manifold and throttle body. Check the air filter and replace if necessary. Let me know if you have any other questions.

sounds like a vacuum intake leak..check a those little tubes for cracks and security. also check your transmission levels, this will sometimes cause a surging problem while driving..if all this checks good then it might be dirty or clogged injectors..purchase a can of Sea Foam from Autozone $10 pour in 1/2 can to half tank of gas and drive around for thirty minutes..highway driving preferred, and see if that will clean up the fuel system. Can i get some feedback, thanks
