Is your olds a throttle body injected or cylinder fuel injected? or is it still a carburator?
If it's the throttle body there has been many times those injectors begin to gum up
and will cause the rough idle and even stalling out.

cylinder fuel injected
Has it had a lot of fuel put in recently or has it been just a little here and there?
Being a vehicle not driven a whole lot gasoline as well as diesel do break down and can gum up
Some of those chuncks may have made its way through the lines and filter.
I would honestly suggest some higher octane fuel and some injector cleaner added in the tank.
Take it for a nice long drive and it might pass things through.
How old is the battery? has it been changed recently within 5years?
It may be a low battery problem. You may have enough to try and start it but then it looses power.
Which would explain the giving it gas and it will stay running.

is your car a 79 or an 85?if it's a 79 you probably need to repace the dimmer switch on the floor, may be the same for a 85.
SOURCE: turned my wipers on in 1980 oldsmobile cutlass only one arm moved
Take your car to AutoZone and tell them. It is either the windshield wiper motor or a small plastic piece that connects the arm to the motor broke. I am leaning toward the plastic piece being broken, it is really inexpensive to fix. The people at AutoZone will be able to check it and tell you exactly hat is wrong. WARNING: watch them and what they do. some people are not as honest as others.

Carbon Built up in gas tank,
unbelievable, LOL Hope your not
that gullable,or vapor lock from the 1960's
Hi, what engine size do you have? Have you checked the fuel pressure? Sounds like a fuel pump. BTW, I've never heard of carbon build up in a fuel tank, thats a load of B*S* because they want you to bring it in so they can tear it apart. Get back to me.....MIke
We've been driving it for over a year now but not on too long of drive maybe 80 miles. It drives 50 a day though. We've emptied the tank several times and refilled. We had it serviced and they put injector cleaner in it. It's really been since this time that we've developed this issue. We just had to replace the battery and alternator this year. Do you happen to have a recommendation on the type of injector fluid. My son disapproves of them says they can cause more trouble.
