I am changing the fuel filter on a 2005 ford freestar, I want to know how to relieve the fuel pressure . do i just remove the fuel cap or is there a fuel pressure relief valve in the engine bay.

Special Tool(s) EFI/CFI Fuel Pressure Gauge
310-012 (T80L-9974-B) WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury.
WARNING: Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before servicing or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing personal injury or a fire hazard.

1. Remove the schrader valve cap and attach the EFI/CFI Fuel Pressure Gauge.

NOTE: Open the manual valve slowly to relieve the system pressure. This may drain fuel from the system. Place fuel in a suitable container.
Open the manual valve on the EFI/CFI Fuel Pressure Gauge slowly and relieve the fuel pressure.

Filter Removal

1. Relieve the fuel pressure; refer to Above.
1. Remove the fuel filter (9155).
   1. Disconnect the fuel lines

1. Relieve the fuel pressure; refer to Pressure Relief in this section.
1. Disconnect the safety clip from the male hose.
Install the fuel line disconnect tool and push into the fitting.
Install the fuel line disconnect tool and push into the fitting. Separate the fittings.
• Inspect for damage.
• Clean the fittings.

How to Replace a Fuel Filter (DIY Complexity: Moderate / Time: 1.4 hours)

Parts:
1. Fuel Filter

Tools:
1. 3/8 in. Drive Ratchet
2. Hose Pincher
3. Flare Nut Wrench
4. Flat Head Screwdriver
5. Socket Set

Steps:
Step 1 Open the hood and locate the fuel filter. If the fuel filter is not in the engine compartment, follow the fuel line from the tank until the fuel filter is located.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.

Step 2 If the fuel filter has a clear case, inspect the filter element for dirt.

Step 3 If the fuel filter case is not see-through, remove it from the fuel line. Drain the fuel from the filter into a container and inspect the condition of the fuel.
o Tip: Caution: Before removing fuel lines or fuel related parts, make sure that the fuel pressure is relieved from the vehicle fuel system. To relieve the pressure in fuel injected systems, remove the fuel pump fuse and run the engine.

Step 4 Install the new fuel filter making sure that the flow is in the correct direction. The arrow on the fuel filter is the direction of flow from the tank to the engine.

Step 5 Secure the lines back onto the fuel filter. If applicable, reinstall the fuel pump fuse.

Step 6 Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Step 7 Test drive the vehicle to check for a rough running engine, hesitation, or lack of power.

2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
4. Remove the bolts and the fuel filter heat shield.
5. Remove the nuts and the fuel filter shield.
6. Disconnect the quick release and spring lock couplings and remove the fuel filter.
   

To install:

1. Remove any fuel line caps.
2. Install the new fuel filter, connecting the quick-release and spring-lock couplings.
3. Install the fuel filter shield.
4. Install the fuel filter heat shield. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
5. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

Yes, there is still pressure in the fuel lines even when the vehicle is not running. You can relieve the pressure by depressing the valve on the fuel line in the hood compartment. Be sure to use a rag. Also, take off your fuel cap to relieve additional pressure in the system.

Fuel filters can usually be found on the drivers side under carriage about middle of the vehicle. There should be a canister type filter with 2 metal lines connected to it. One on both sides of the canister. you will need to disconnect both lines and the bracket that holds the filter in place and install the new filter. I do suggest that you remove the fuel cap to try and relieve some of the fuel pressure built up in the lines before disconnecting the filter so you won't be sprayed too much with fuel. The two plastic pieces go on each side of the filter. You push both of the plastic tools inward while pulling the fuel lines outward. Make sure you remove gas cap to relieve fuel pressure before removing filter. An icecream bucket may be handy.

Pull out the fuel pump relay and start the engine, let it run till it goes dead. fuel pressure relieved!

open fuel cap then on fuel rail u will have a stym that looks like valve stm on a tire prees the center of that to relieve prssr then need a small tool to femove filter slip over the line push into filter seat will releas --do tank side 1st and on new filter u will have rubber caps save 1 -after u remove 1st line place cap over the filter inlet wiil stop gas frm going all over u then same on out let

To relieve the pressure, find on the fuel rail on the intake a schroeder valve, looks like a larger version of a tire valve, possibly with a cap. Remove cap, push center pin on valve to relieve pressure. Caution as high pressure fuel will come out, I hold a rag over it while I do it.
