SOURCE: engine running rich after emissions check

Hi,
Your oxygen sensor is designed to send a signal to the engine, telling it to burn more or less lean as determined by the oxygen in the exaust. This may be your culprit.
I hope this helps... Good luck.

The car won't pass smog check the computer says it's running to rich on the right and left bank

Diagnose the fuel trim issue

Need professional tools & knowledge

Running Lean & driven rich-- would be my guess

Vacuum leak,O2 problem,many possibilities,failed converter,
spark plugs,coils & on & on

Have to work on them a few times a year
Can't just drive till you have a problem

You do not go to inspection until you road test & look to see
if the Emission Monitors run, or you know you will fail

Need 7 of 8 monitors, the evap system, they can check the gas cap
if hasn't run

Runs rich

How can you fail more than once?

After you fail, you go to a repair shop &
resolve ALL Vehicle issues

Then the shop road tests until all 8 I/M Monitors
run clear ,or there is no reason to go back to inspection
knowing your going to fail.

The problem is the shops & peoples inability to explain
what they need taken care of.

If you never work on the vehicle for years, then you don't
go to inspection,it is a given you will fail

Spark Plugs-every 3 years
Check for Cylinder Misfires
Always install a New Air Filter before inspection
Always install new fresh full sys oil before inspection

Oxygen Senors get replaced every 100,000 miles

Have to road test with professional scan tool & look at
all data,check monitors,fuel trim,O2 etc & check for codes

You have to spend the money to evaluate the vehicle, to see
if it is ready to go for inspection, not many are, their just driven
& neglected

Rich could be-- O2 Sensors,Dirty MAF Sensor,Vacuum Leaks,
Injector Leaks & more,I have seen a dirty air filter fail a car

I own a 2004 avalanche with a 5.3 vortex. I was driving on the highway @ 110km/p/hr, I then accelorated to about 125 and my engine check light came on. I took it to a garage and they scanned the engine.The...

Spark plugs don't fail to fire. They are replaced at 60,000 miles or 3 years.
Scanning for codes and using an ignition scope, are two different things
I have run OEM plug wires 17,18 and currently 21 years, on different vehicles.
Replace, only if they fail and test bad. Only one wire EVER fails, not all of them
The O2 Sensor may have set a code.
You don't change it,because of that.
You look at the data, and if it is working correctly, and what caused it to go
out of range and set the check light.

Did he check for a failed injector,on the bank that was rich?
Was exhaust gas tested, to determine the rich condition?
There is no guessing or might be's

Do a cylinder leak down test
Don't like the results, pull the valve cover, and check out the valve spring theory

What was the codes that you got when driving it?
How many miles on it?
Vehicle history?

I failed my smog, the guy said it was a gross polluter. and that it gives out to much emission from the exhaust. how do i fix that

That would all depend on which readings it failed on.high Co's would be fuel related(running to rich),oxygen sensor failing, dirty air filter, fuel drenched engine oil, failing catylitic convertor, timing incorrectly set, incorrect valve lash settings,High hydrocarbons would be spark related(misfire, poor cap and rptor, bad spark plugs, plug wires. does it have visable smoke at exhaust? one of the main causes of failure is if car all in all runs great,no check engine light,no reason why you should think it should fail is that vehicle was not warmed up enough prior to emmisions test ran beleave it or not.you need to take car out on highway drive it hard for 10 miles or so make sure catylitic convertor is fully heated up and car is out of warm up stage and then take to do test.alot of times people fail to do this and take there car at lunch etc to testing station down street where you then jump out and car sometime can sit for 20-30 minutes before test ran, which leaves car still in the warm up stage, running rich until fully warmed up which is to late once car is testing mode.vehicle made need nothing except to be nice and hot,and people leave testing place thinking that it needs costly repairs and in reaLITY does not

Emissions test fail mixture to rich

what i used to do is pour a small bottle of rubbing alcohol in the gas tank....this mixture burns very hot so it will clean everything out thus burning all the gas particles off......i used to do this in a 1988 mustang gt that ran real rich because of performance parts and i couldnt ever get it to pass the tests....also try o2 sensors as well as possibly map sensor if equipped...this could be the problem....
temp gauge not working? check wiring and also check tempature sending unit and block temperature sensor.
