In most cases that is what's going on with your car, if questionable, you may want to turn on your A/C to see if the problem worsen. If so, you may want to tighten up the lose belt or take it to a local shop if you're not comfortable doing it yourself.

2000 montero sport: There's a loud squealing noise coming from the engine. What could be wrong?

Squealing is most common with loose or worn belts, I would start by replacing the drive belt on the front of the motor and go from there, Its easier to troubleshoot a squealing motor if you know that the belt or belts are good.

2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Squeals when vehicle starts. It stops when I think I hear the fan start. Also, If the heat/ blower are on with the lights,it dims the headlights and the fans intensity drops...

the squeal when you start is the drive belt, it is slipping on the alternate you have to remember that the starter is the largest load on the battery so when the engine starts the alternator goes into a full output mode so there is a lot of load on the alternator belt right after start up also this probably why you are having a low charge at idle the belt is slipping enough to allow the alternator to slip at low ingoing speeds, take a good look at the belt tensionor and the drive belt best guess is that you will need both a new belt and a new tensionor.......HAVE FUN

Squealing noise when a/c is turned on, then noise stops. Is this an a/c fan belt or something else? Would like to know what to expect when I go to auto mechanic.

Sounds like you might have a loose are worn fan belt. Specially if this is a V belt. With the hood up have someone turn the air conditioner on and watched the compressor clutch if it stops turning you might have a bad compressor. If it keeps turning in the squealing just goes away, you might just have a loose belt. Good luck.

On a 2003 mitsubishi montero sport w/ 3.0 v6 a/c belt squeals

Your belt is loose (and it just needs tightening) or it is worn and needs to be replaced. It may look ok but they glaze over; all the little ridges get shinny and slip.
