If the timing belt keeps breaking and bending valves, the timing belt and cylinder head repair is not being done correctly. It's as simple as that. Are you changing the tensioner and idler pullies when replacing the belt? Is it timed correctly? Was the timing belt tension adjusted properly? Were the cam journals checked for damage? If not, you are asking for another belt failure.
If you want to know why the check engine light is coming on, you will have to ask your engine computer. Every time the light comes on it is storing a fault code to tell you why. You must scan your engine control module to retrieve the fault code(s) so you can get it properly diagnosed and repaired.
From an old gringo retired in Costa Rica. The present engine out of TOTAL
l overhaul, new pistons, valves, all that. The cams assembly inspected by nothing replaced. Earlier, we replaced the 1800cc injector assembly with 1600 injector assembly as told that is same-same. The car was in well-prepared dead-storage for near 12 years awaiting estate
close. Next owner blew engine immediately because only gassed the puppy and did not do anything to engine before driving it away...700 meters and poof. TOTALLY wrecked motor.
After two mechanics, I´ve found one good one, and he´s puzzled on this. We´ve popped three timing belts with usual bent or broken valves. Hyundai in Costa Rica will NOT service any Hyundai over six years old, period, so I´ve got what I´ve got, and he´s honest, speaks no english, but wide reputation for honesty on Hyundai´s. I´ll take your english instructions and go to a PROFESSIONAL translator and translate it properly for him to follow. After third broken belt and a few bent valves only, I figured to change the way I start it. I wait until the CHECK ENGINE idiot light goes OFF, count to ten, and then start. SOMETIMES, after that, the CHECK ENGINE light will go on, usually after starting a gentle to steep hill-climb at 20-30mph. IMMEDIATELY I stop, shut down engine, and restart the engine. It again ¨sounds right,¨ runs right, until the next CHECK ENGINE light goes on, anywhere from 1 to 10 or 15 miles later, and I do the procedure again, again light remains off, engine ¨sounds right,¨ etc. I´m driving it locally only, as the belt pops and damage happened at 40-45mph highway conditions.
If you´ll re-write a step by step mechanic to mechanic thing as full as you want, I´ll have it translated very correctly, take it over to Jose´ , I´ll give the car to him for a while so he can do his mechanical and computer checks which I will have to have translated as that read-out is in english as the car was imported here via USA in 1995.
I´ll be glad to pay you for your time, or however that is done. Please let me know.
If you have a call anywhere USA phone, you can reach me in Costa Rica by dialing1-602-546-7178 ...A Phoenix number, or I can call you direct from here. It´s toll free both way...VOIP phone...Magic Jack...all of we gringos have a number-.--14.00unlimited a year to and from USA to here.
Waiting for the check engine light to go out before starting the engine will have absolutely NO effect on the timing belt breaking. If you scan your computer and tell me what fault codes are in the computer, I can help you to diagnose the fault codes. Until I know which code (or codes) we are dealing with, I cannot be much help.
P.S. a very good source of step-by-step instructions with diagrams for the timing belt (as well as all the other service information available for your car) can be obtained from [alldatadiy.com] The factory service information as well as service bulletins and recall information can be obtained from this site for right around $27 (U.S.) This is the cost of a 1 year subscription.
