I have the same problem, My timing belt broke and the valves bent. I took it to an auto machanic and they put new valves and everything in it. When I got it back it ran really good, but now it runs real rough at idle. when I'm out on the road it seens to be fine but when I go to stop it almost stalls out.

Squeeling noise, very rough idle (sometimes stalling), no engine code

Rough idle / stall at idle Check for vacume leaks & split intake tube or loose clamps on intake. Noise put spot of grease on drive belts if noise goes you may need new belts or a tighten up.

Replaced belt still makes noise

Dear John,

Try this. Is could be because the old belt was slipping and has polished the pulleys or "glazed" them. So before you replace that noisy belt scrub all of the pulleys well with a scotch brite pad, or a good wire brush to remove the glaze and rough up the surface. Clean them off with brake cleaner afterward. Belts work by friction so if the surface is polished too much the belt will slip, Or try adjusting the belt TENSION will correct the problem. If this does not correct the problem you can try removing the belt altogether, and "reversing" it, and then reinstalling and properly adjusting the tension.
Hope This helps.

In a 2001 2liter Kia the timing belt broke.. Can I just replace it or do I need to have the valves checked first.? I heard that Kia fixed that problem of bending valves in this model.

Although a KIA manual will state that this is an interference engine, it is not. I know because I have replaced a shredded timing belt on my used 2000 Sportage to take it home and it ran great. Just recently, the timing idler pulley bolt broke while I was driving causing the belt to come off. I replaced the tensioner pulley and drilled out and re-tapped the idler bolt hole and installed the new idler and the belt (it was only 2 months old at the time) and it runs great again. THESE ARE NOT INTERFERENCE ENGINES!!!! you don't have to tear down the top end of the engine to inspect for any damage and it is very simple to install a timing belt on this motor as long as it is done properly.

Align marks on timing belt pulley and pump body.

Camshaft pulley alignment marks
9f1c7ef.gif
  1. Align marks on camshaft pulleys with alignment marks on seal plate.
  2. Install timing belt. NOTE: No looseness should exist on the tension side and at the camshaft pulleys.
  3. Loosen tensioner lock bolt.
  4. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions in direction of rotation and check that timing marks are still in alignment.
  5. Tighten timing belt tension lock bolt to 27-38 ft lb (32-52 Nm).
  6. Apply a force of 22 lbs to timing belt between camshaft sprockets.
  7. Belt deflection should measure 0.30-0.33 in (7.5-8.5 mm)
  8. NOTE: Replace tensioner spring if timing belt deflection is excessive.

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
  3. Turn off all electrical loads.
  4. Connect a tachometer and verify idle speed is between 750-850 RPM.
  5. Connect a timing light to number one cylinder.
  6. Verify the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the timing mark on the timing belt cover are aligned at 4°BTDC.

My tensioner broke and messed up my timing on my 2000 kia sportage. I need to know how to re-time my engine.

ok this is easy but get a friend to help. i assume that because you know the tensioner broke that u've gotten everything out of the way on the timing belt.

in the bottom pulley you will see a notch and a little indicator line on the block line those up.

next line the "E" on the right pulley up to the small marker in the top of the backing plate. if you need me to clear this up just ask

then align the "I" on the other pulley to that mark above it and slap on your new belt and your good to go.
