Hi,
That belt you have seen is a balancer belt, used mainly to eliminate the engines vibration. Actually invented by Mitsubishi, as we all know Hyundai and Mitsubishi have common designs. Thus, all Mitsubishi patented design can have Hyundai's stamp on it!
Hope that helps you out!

Ratcheting noise on startup

Yes the tensioner is what keeps pressure on the chain or belt to keep it tight. If the chain or belt gets too much slack it could jump a tooth or two or worse it could come off while you are driving, causing severe engine damage.

What is the replacement schedule for 2006 hyudai sonata timing belt

Both engines .. the four and the six have timing chains.. not belts.. so there is no replacement for the life of the engine.

Some of the six cylinder models did have problems with a Timing Chain tensioner.. if you have the six and it makes a rattling sound when first started..that could be an indicator. There is a TSB (technical service bulletin) on this and it should identify which cars are affected.

Best of luck!

Does the timing chain should be changed and for how long?

timing chains should only be changed if there is noise or problem in that area. if it has a belt most belts need to be changed at 60,000 miles and some at 100,000. Engine damage may occur in many engines run with a timing belt that breaks.

You do not state the type of engine - 6 cylinder has a timing chain, not necessary to replace.

A 2006 sonata 4 cyclinder does it have a timing belt or chain

If it is a chain then no it does not need to be changed. I would call the local dealer and give them the vin# to make sure 100% if it is a chain or a belt. Achain does have guides made of plastic that you may want to think about along with the tensioner. Good luck.

What is the timing belt for 2006 sonata GL

Its a chain located inside the engine itself, you have to take the engine cover off to get to it.
