Usually just means that the car is due for service. The dealer can shut that off when you bring it in. If its been a while since you had it in, that could be it. If you just had the car in somewhere for service, call them and ask them if they didnt reset it correctly.

Most VW are interferance motors. That would mean the pistons could have hit some valves. I would stay away.
Also have you seen the motor? I may be off but I thought the VR6's had a chain. Even if, its still an interfernce motor.
