There is not a cam sensor on the 1.9 sohc or dohc engine. The ignition module looks at the collapsing magnetic field of the ignition coil to determine cam reference.

Did you mean crank sensor?

Are you coming up with a code for the cam sensor?

If so the fix is usually to remove the coils and ignition module from the transmission. Clean the area they mount to with a scotchbrite pad until all the corrosion is removed. Reinstall the ignition module and coils using new bolts available from saturn/GM. Clear the code.

In some cases the ignition module or the coil or the ignition wires can also cause this code if they are bad.

I have a 1997 Saturn SL1. It was running fine during the colder months but now that it is warm doesn't really run at all. I can start it up when it has been sitting for a while drive a few miles but...

1. Start the car and let it run until it reaches operating temperture.
2. Feel the top radiator hose. If the engine is warm, but the top radiator hose is not, the thermostat is stuck closed. Replace it. (be sure to ask for a thermostat housing gasket when purchasing thermostat).
3. If this does not correct the problem:
a. replace both the air and fuel filter b. add one bottle of Sea Foam Fuel Additive (auto parts store will have it) to full tank of fresh gas (add before fueling).
It is also a good idea to perform a routine tune-up which inlcudes the above as well as:
1. spark plugs and spark plug wires 2. distributor cap and rotor (if equipped) (otherwise you'll have coil packs) 3. change both transmission fluid and oil (with filters and gaskets) 4. air filter and fuel filter
If the problem persists, have a diagnostics test performed by a techinician and consider the following repairs/replacement:
1. MAS - mass airflow sensor 2. crank shaft sensor 3. cam shaft sensor 4. O2 Sensor(s)

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Check the cam/crank sensors. Also, if the car happens to have a distributor, make sure it is not 180 degrees off. If this does not help, then do a compression check. Remember, and engine only needs three things to run. Fuel, Spark, and Compression. (in order of course.) The firing order for your engine is 1,4,3,2.

Saturn 2000 SL1 - 4 cylinder - won't start - we have changed the crank shaft positioner and car still does not start. There is no power to start the fuel pump. Fuel pump checks out good. Fuel pump not...

Try pulling the engine coolant temp sensor, They often crack not sure why but the ceramic tip cracks makes the car hard to start, or won't start, the car's idle may race while shifting gears, and often smokes. The sensor is on the right side of the engine when looking at it on the head. Easy to change and get too
