I have a 96 Olds Ciera.going down the street motor stalled.Overhead light went on.Tried to start,nothing.No lights on dash no cranking of the starter.radio light not on.Headlights work.Had a bad electrical burn smell when it happened.

Have you fuel? Filter may be blocked or ignition coil breaking down?

did you check the fuel pump is working first?

The overdrive solenoid in the transmission locks the torque converter, and at low speeds, if it activates or hasn't released from a high enough speed, it will cause stalling. If that is what's happening, it could be the solenoid, or the signal line to it from the ECM, or the ECM itself not working properly.

Have your Catalytic converters checked! Sounds like there getting plugged!

Try taking the car to Autozone or similar business for a free scan of your computer (your car is a pre-OBD2 system and your mechanic may have a scanner that reads only post-'96 autos). The scan will usually only point to problem areas, not specific components. That's where the mechanic comes in with specific tests. Good luck!

tcc stuck try unpluging it and see if same but dont drive with unpluged will burn up transmission also could be fuel pump . or crank shaft postion sensor . try the tcc first then vheck fuel presure , and then check for codes with scanner

Mass air flow meter will cause all sorts of problems with the dash lights have it changed then try

my 93 olds stalls then dosent turn over but i take ecu fuse out and wait a few minutes it will start and run till next time it decides to stall

but here's how to fix it :

1. Get an Old Priest
2. Get an Young Priest
3. Have an Exorcism done on the car
4. If this doesnt take care of it, its the devil, burn it.

try over riding the starter relay on the fender ,it has one there right?. dont go to a mechanic yet. the engine aint seized. if it doesnt have this relay then i would get the alternator tested. if you want to test it yourself it can be costly for the right equip. autozone usually tests for free. i dont know were you live so if theres not an autozone. let me know if you cant get it tested.
