Hi,
Code 300= multiple cylinder misfiring detected
Code 404= EGR valve position sensor circut fault (could mean bad EGR valve or tube leak)
Code 443= EVAP VMV circut fault

All these codes could be a by product of the real problem which I suspect is mechanical in nature.
The whistling sound you hear is what concerns me. That sound is usually due to your engine sucking air from either a leaking intake manifold gasket, a leaking plenum gasket, a leaking or cracked / broken vaccuum line / air hose, or air intake hose is off or loose. Check all your vaccum hoses / plastic lines especially the rubber connecting boots and 90 degree boot connectors and your air filter, filter box is sealed and air intake hose from air filter box is tight / air filter not restricted. If all those look ok, spray starting fluid around intake to engine mating surface where gasket is while motor is idling. if it revs up, locate that area and spray it several times verifying motor revs up each time. That would indicate a leak in the gasket. Do this also for the intake plenum, but do not spray near the air intake hose from air filter box or throttle body.
See if any of those isolate a problem and let us know if you find anything......Mike

Thank you very much and since both of you experts have almost the same reasoning, I would definitely check these first. Just a further question. Some people also consider fuel pump and catalytic converter to be potential cause. Do you think it is possible?

Yes, those could also contribute to the loss of power and bad engine performance, but would not explain the whistling you hear.....Mike

Whistle noise indicates a major vacuum leak. Maybe something loose in the intake system. Maybe a vacuum hose disconnected. Will explain lose of power also.

2000 Pathfinder starts fine, after stopping, hesitates ran ok but now, I have to let it cool down for it to start and drive again. Changed fuel filter, helped but now s worse, 203,000 miles.

whistle on acceleration means there is a pipe off or a crack in airline or manifold. could even be the egr has blown. as if the cat had gone the way you have said it would of been open all the time the engine is running, and it's supposed to open and close on ecu commands

Whistling noise under slight acceleration

check for a cracked manifold or cracked flex section at the manifold
it is under load so it is not a vacuum leak as the vacuum is low under acceleration and high under deceleration or idle
indicates a gas leak or possible blockage from failed cat converter

Locate radiator cap

A whistle noise is usually a vac leak.
The cap is where you fill the tank with coolant.

2002 merc cougar 2.5 liter has loud whistling

Sounds like a vacuume leak, use some carb cleaner in a spray can and gently spray the engine. When you find the leak the engine will stumble, check in that area for the leak.

Whistling noise when accelerating

you most likely have an aftermarket radio installed
the noise you hear is engine noise, if yo turn your radio off it will go away
this can be fixed by either getting better wiring for your aftermarket radio or by installing a noise filter, you can purchase that at most big electronic stores
