First of all replace bad wheel bearing !!! This bad wheel bearing causes ASR light ON.

ASR - Acceleration Skid Control system.
When ASR warning light blinking the system is activated itself for car acceleration skid control.

For today's typical high-torque engines, traction control (ASR) can increase both comfort and safety, particularly when driving on slippery roads or surfaces offering differing levels of grip. Traction control permits smooth starting and acceleration through the full speed range without wheel-spin or fishtailing.

ASR only operates in conjunction with the electronic accelerator (E-gas) and uses components of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If one wheel suddenly begins to rotate faster than the others (slip), ASR intervenes in the engine management system and reduces power until the wheel stops spinning.
The ASR system represents a further contribution to active safety as it maintains vehicle traction and directional stability throughout the acceleration phase at any speed. In addition, it reduces tyre wear. Activation of the ASR system is indicated by a flashing indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.

The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. If the ESP lights on the dashboard permanently the ESP system is faulty. You must access the ESP Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ESP ECU, in other words reset the ESP system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.

VW beetle makes high pitched whining sound when braking or going a slower speed.

Either your brake indicators are telling you your pads are worn, or your wheel bearing are going bad, during braking the weight of the vehicle and the preasure put on the bearing changes and will cause noise indicating they need changed, your bearing are more than likely to be a closed system that is pressed into what is called a hub assembly which have the bearings built in. So you ask for hub assembly.

Triangle light

Hi there:

You're seeing the symbol for a fault with the traction control (ASR) system. The ABS control module will have to be scanned for codes using a VW-specific scan tool to determine the fault. It could be as simple as a wheel speed sensor.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

I have a 2002 VW New Beetle. The ABS light has come on and there is a chiming beep and the ABS light flickers. What could be the problem?

Dash noise from VW Beetle

Must be a bad front wheel bearing. Does the pitch change as you speed up and slow down?

Asr problem

MB has ASR,  VW now has ESP.  You posted in Jetta TDI, but say you have a SL600.   Both are slip/traction control programs and both can be manually overridden by dashboard button.  When the ASR or ESP is locked out, the light will be on all the time, maybe you can just push the button?   When driving, if this light flashes on, then ASR/ESP is trying to help get the wheel that is spinning not to.

If the light came on after replacing parts, or a repair job,  something may be wrong with the parts (non OEM), the service or a sensor may have been damaged.

Check with dealer for a recall for your vehicle on brake switch ... vw had a recall on these around 2002-2005.

Noise when turn at slow speed

Raise the front of the car an grab the top and bottom of the tire and see if you can move it back and forth. If so, your hub assy.(wheel bearing) is worn out. check both sides. If it's ok, remove the tires and check you brake wear.
