Hi.

first thing, whan you turn the keys to step 2 in ignition, the warning lights are supposed to come on, so you can see that the lights are actually working. they then go out when the engine is running.
as long as they go out when the engine is running, then they are not a problem.
if the battery has only been going flat since the service in Fords, then take it back, and complain.
ask them exactly what was done, and keep complaining until they do something.
if they have caused a drain on the battery, then it is up to them to fix it.

Testimonial: "Thanks very appreciated"

Thanks alot, the lights do go out when the car is running, could this just be a dodgy battery though as the car is 4 or so years old but with mot and full service surely the battery and alternator would have been checked, is a battery drain the most likely cause as ive read alot about these. im no mechanic and dont have a clue. thanks for your help anyway

  • paul miles Jun 22, 2011

    hi.

if the warning lights are ok, then it is quite possible that the battery is faulty.
i am not sure if the alternator and battery would be checked on a service. it would depend on the garage.
they are certainly NOT checked as part of the mot.
most garages offer FREE battery and alterator checks if you just drive in and ask them. should take less than 10 minutes. it would be worth doing this before doing anything else.

a battery drain would not normally "just happen". it would normally be caused by new electrical equipment being fitted, or something simillar.
a faulty battery can happen at any time, without anything else causing it.

have the battery and alternator checked first.

U.S. or Europe Focus?

  • gerry bissi Jun 22, 2011

As Paul said, the battery could have a shorted cell, or you could have a drain overnight due to something drawing it down. The quick test is to see if the battery reads between 12 & 12 1/2 volts with the engine off. If it reads that on shut down and below 9.6 volts after overnight, you have a residual draw.
You could disconnec thte battery cable overnight to see if it works ok after you hook it back up. However, you will lose all your memories in teh radio, computers etc.

it sounds like the charging system is ok.

Ok 05 ford explorer crank but won't start. had a mobile mechanic to checked and he said that it is the key because the chip is faulty

  3. Do this again, but turn the key in the opposite direction.

My Ford KA has no power on the ignition switch. Did check all the fuses. No problem there. Don't know where else to look. Help please

The most likely reason for ignition power issues is either a flat battery or a fault in the charging system. Do you get dashboard lights when you turn the key to the first and second positions? Do the dash lights dim when you turn the key to position three, (Engine start)? Do you get any sounds when you turn the key like a 'click' or the engine turning slowly?
Here is a simple battery test. Turn the ignition to position 2, (ignition On, engine Off), Turn on your lights and switch to Main/High beam. Stand in front of the car an look at the front lights. If the battery is low they won't be very bright.
Do you have a multimeter? Put the probes directly on the battery terminals with red to the positive and black to the negative. The multimeter set to volts should give you a reading of 12.6 volts or higher for a fully charged battery. Anything at or below 9 volts will not be enough to start the vehicle.
** Keep well clear of any moving engine part!**
If you can get the vehicle started, (Jump leads or 'bump start'), use the same method on the battery. This shows if the alternator is supplying charge to the battery. You should get a higher reading, somewhere around 14 volts.

Engine knocking sporatic and now check engine light and constant knocking in my 07 Ford Focus automatic..HELP! Car is dead in driveway!

The first thing to do would be to check your oil. (low or contaminated oil is the most likely cause of engine knocking) Make sure it is full, clean and looks normal.
Next, check your engine coolant (Antifreeze). Make sure it is at the proper level and looks normal.
If either of these are not right, you need to find out why and correct the problem.

If the engine oil and coolant look OK, the next step is to scan your Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and retrieve the fault codes to find out why it has turned the Check Engine light on. There are about 200 reasons why the computer could possibly have turned the light on, so I can't tell you any more until I know what codes are present.
