1989 460 running rich

Is it a fresh fuel smell or an unburnt exhaust smell? Is the exhaust black? Sounds like too much fuel pressure. Check the fuel pressure on the rail. You may have a bad fuel pressure regulator. Also a bad coolant temperature sensor can cause it to run very rich.

are you talking about exhaust smell or something else, need more info and clarification

You have ignition cylinder misfires or a rich fuel
condition, that most likely ruined the exhaust converter
That is what you smell, a converter that should operate
900 to 1300 degrees
Yours got to 1600 & melted down
Now you need to solve ALL ENGINE ISSUES FIRST
then replace the converter & oxygen sensors

Sounds like the car might be running too rich and not fully burning before being pushed out of the exhaust.

if engine is running without missfire check catyletic converter for plugging also very rich running will cause exhaust to glow but will cause alot of black smoke from tail pipe I dont reccomend driving vehicle till exhaust or rich running is fixed can lead to engine failure

it is but i would try something much easyer like replace a coil pack

Sound like a rich by a long way; are you check if have smoke in exhaust? Black smoke is fuel, blue smoke is oil.

Also, your injectors are to big and is running rich.

It sounds like it may be your O2 sensor because if it is not working properly, the engine cannot determine how much fuel to ingest which would cause rough idling.

• sometimes a bad 02 sensor causes a fuel smell from the exhaust, or you can just remove and check the sensor. if its really black "like charcoal" you might wana get it changed, also checked the wires on it and make sure they're not torn or anything. have scanned to find problem code if check engine light is on. good luck!!
  

The engine is running rich, find what is causing the rich run and that will fix the rotten egg smell

if smell rich but you have a lean code then most likelly the 02 sensor is not working good, also a stuck egr will give you that problem
