My 2002 pt cruiser only smokes when I sart it, and then it dissipates. can you tell me what is causing this?

Smoking at startup can be one of two things....water or oil.
Moisture buildup in the muffler will show up as white smoke on startup, usually more noticeable on cooler mornings than on warm days. Blue smoke on startup is usually caused by small amounts of oil that leak past the valve seals as they get older, worn, and dry out. This is not usually a major issue unless and until it gets to the point of causing oil-fouling of the spark plug(s). Then you must either repair the problem or be prepared to clean your spark plug(s) periodically if the engine starts to display a noticeable misfiring.

How do i fix smoke coming off my car?

Don't drive the car. With white smoke, coming out of the exhaust, you must have blown your head gasket. It will also evaporate the cooling fluid, making the engine run without cooling.
Look for a certified repair shop, to get this repaired.

Has anyone had a problem with excessive oil consumption?

just about everyone does with either an old car or a new car with high mileage.how excessive? is oil consumption.well first thing is to check for oil leaks either underneath the motor or any oil lines feed into the motor .any major leaks would be pretty noticeable.if none are present then one would assume that your motor is burning the oil through the exhaust system .check to see what color smoke is coming threw the tail pipe.blue or black smoke indicates oil burning white will indicate engine coolant burning.in any case some color smoke is normal just depends on how much.so lets say your exhaust smoke is normal still could be burning oil just not a noticeable amount.on average you shouldnt have to add anymore than 2 quarts a month or every 1000 miles .depending on your driving conditions if you are having to add more than this there would be a leak some where or heavy color smoke.keep up on oil changes and always add lucas oil usually 1 quart its alot thicker than conventional oil so it reduces engine wear and will handle any small leaks in the engine components like the pistons and rings.if problem still present get to a dealer or certified mechanic as soon as possible good luck.

I recently bought a 2001 avalon with 139k runs and drives great but check engine light came on, we did oil change and did not go out but also have noticed white smoke coming from tailpipe when cranked for...

First, the check engine light is telling you there is a problem with the emissions or performance of the engine. You need to have someone scan the computer for trouble codes.
The smoke in the morning could be a leaking head gasket - something is leaking into the cylinders and being burned.

93 honda accord, replaced head gasket but smokes bad in morning from the exhaust

The valve guides in the cylinder head are probably worn, allowing oil to seep into the cylinders overnight and burn off when you start up in the morning. That is why you're loosing oil, it's being burned off.

Morning White Smoke At Start-up (2003 4cyl Camry)

This problem is common but often over looked. Moisture vapor is a grayish white color but it dissipates very quickly. Smoke that is grayish white is caused specifically from burning oil. The problem you have is a small seal called a valve seal. It is very common in cars that sit a fair amount of the time. The seal gradually starts to leak and allow tiny drops of oil to drip into the combustion chamber. When the engine is started then it smokes until the oil is burned. Due to the amount of time that your car smokes after start tells me that the leak is very small. That is why there is no oil consumption. This is not going to harm the car unless it becomes very bad and then the only thing that would happen is more smoke and fouled plugs. You can start using a heavier weight oil and add an oil treatment to the oil when you have it changed. This may evin stop it all together. Hope this answered your question.
