1997 Subaru Legacy GT 2.5L

I have the check engine light on speradically. The car doesn't seem to drive much different when it is on, then when it turns off. Any idea what this could be?

i have the same problem with my legacy 2.2 GX took it to subaru showing error code knock sensor i thought it was due to the fact that only 1 radiator cooling fan was kicking in not both it is in subaru tomorrow for the knock sensor to be replaced lets see what happens. i still think it is due to the cooling fans.

Check the knock sensor.

The light comes on when you climb a hill, accelerate quickly or do anything that advances the timing a lot and the knock sensor doesn't hear the knocks (pinging). The engine timing is not retarded, so you get a misfire.

The computer turns off the CEL if it sees the car start and run with no misfire of this nature 4 times in a row.

the check engine light comes on if there is a problem with thecomputer system related to the emmision, when this is is repaired the light on can only be turned off with a monitor, code reader. some of these are quite inexpensive.over the web or at a part store.

Subaru legacy TS-R

That depends on the type of fault!

The car will have to be connected to a diagnostics system to find out the fault.
