No, that's wrong. The setup on the Sonata doesn't normally require messing with the shift lock release at all. I had the same problem tonight for the first time after owning the car for a year and a half, that's why I looked up this issue.
Same problem with my 2011. Its going to the dealer on Monday. Instead of pushing the shift lock release button I've been shutting the car off and starting it again. Seems to do the trick, much like rebooting a computer. I'll try to post the solution the dealer comes up with.
Same problem here with my 2001 too! In Monday for the 3rd time on this. They replaced the contact switch on the brake pedal arm twice now. Works for a few days, then locks up again. My ABS lights up also when this happens. Starting to get on my nerves a bit...
Was there a solution to this
Having same problem with 2011 sonata

Mine is a 2008. No, it is not "normal."
The shift lock is there to prevent you from being able to shift into reverse or park accidentally when you're driving forward, and vice-versa. It is engaged when the brake pedal is not depressed, and should disengage when you press on the brake pedal. This is key ----> the shift lock is switched off and on though the brake light switch. Put on the brakes, brake lights go on and shift lock goes off; release brakes, lights go off and lock goes on.
If your shift lock won't let go, check whether your brake lights are also not working. If not I'd check the fuse for the brake lights and the fuse for the automatic transmission controls (see owner's manual for locations). If they're OK, then check the switch under the dashboard at the brake pedal bracket to make sue the connector is tight. It's a slide in-out connector that you just pinch to unlock, so easy enough to disconnect and re-attach firmly. If that doesn't do it, then maybe a trip to the garage is in order, or to the AP store for a new switch. (When you put it back together be sure to position the switch so the b.lights turn on with just slight pedal motion.) If a new switch doesn't do the trick, the problem is probably in the logic that the switches are supposed to trigger and a trip to a garage or dealer is in order.
Having the same exact problem, same thing with the ABS light as well. Second time I'm taking it back!
