Use the alternator test above, it's simple and free. If the engine keeps running, then your battery is shot. You can try to revive it by adding water to the cells (top access) and putting it on a charger that has a "fast" charge cycle. (It throws more current thru the plates in the battery and will cook off the crud that has amassed on them), or simply replace the battery.

Here's what you do. This sounds like a alternator. Charge your battery up start truck turn on headlights. Take your positive terminal off battery . this will put all the vehichle electronics on the alternator. If your car dies then you need a new alternator.

Does the battery go dead while sitting or while driving? You may have a draw problem where something is draining the battery while parked, or you may have a charging problem, or you may have a bad battery, depending on how it goes dead.

Wont start without being jumped but will die soon after

The problem may be a bad alternator. When the battery is completely dead jump starting the car will charge the battery enough to run the car for short periods. Take the alternator to the auto parts store and have it tested (usually for free).

Battery dopes not hold a charge

How old is the battery? Does the car sit for long periods of time? Or is it an old battery with the vehicle driven only short trips? If thebattery has died many times and you have charged it. It more than likely has a dead cell. The issue with this is it will still read 12v when connected to a battery charger making you think the battery is good. Walmart will test for free, plus they have cheap batteries.

2012 VW Jetta TDI battery won't hold charge and car only clicks and won't start

You need to charge your battery up more. Either get a battery charger or leave the jumper cables hooked up for a longer period of time.
Your battery was probably completely dead. You might even need a new battery...they really don't like to be completely drained.

Why wont my battery charge hold!!

You have a nickle cadmium battery, which develops a 'memory'. Maybe you do not let it go completely dead before you put it back on the charger. NiCad batteries should be allowed to completely run down before recharging. The only fix is battery replacement.

What are possible causes for battery drains when parked for extended periods?

Most cars now have many modules that incorporate "memory" systems that require a constant low voltage supply, including your radio. Most batteries will hold enough charge to last a month without going completely dead. Not sure what you consider "extended period".
If storing for more than a month, you could either put a 2 amp "battery tender" on it or disconnect the battery (but you need to know how to re-arm the security system so when re-connected it will start).

If the battery is going dead in a short time (two weeks or less) have the battery load tested after getting it fully charged. It may be good enough for day to day use but if it's not in really good condition it will get low quickly.
If you have a drain that's unusual, that will require going through the entire electrical system fuse by fuse 'till you find the drain source. At this point it can be so many things that commenting is foolish as testing is the only way to verify anything.

Wont jump start after dead battery, clicking sound

Give the battery 15 min to recharge before you try to start the engine. The battery is to far gone and drawing to much from the others car charging system, so give it time and then try again. Your going to most likely going to need to repalce the battery, once you turn your car off. A battery that far gone will not hold a charge and will burn out your alternator, causing you more work and money to replace the alternator along with the battery.

Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.

Turn the key on, nothing happen, no ligths inside nothing

1) Battery cables disconnected 2) Battery dead, probably shorted. Any other electrical problem, would leave some systems alive. A run down battery that wont turn over the engine, will still be able to power dome lights, or other accesories.
