My 2004 kia van is overheating. Had the same problem a few months ago smelled antifreeze, no heat in the van and overheating. I changed the thermostat and it has been fine until today. Temp gauge is spiking hot, coolant is not circulating, fans are coming on, coolant in radiator is NOT hot. Thinking thermostat is still bad or water pump? Help?

If you radiator is full ,as in you have no leaks, it is most likely going to be a water pump issue. Unless you have a serious clog in the system, but chances are its the water pump, not an uncommon thing to go wrong

cool air and overheating point to low coolant level. Do you have a bleeder valve near the thermostat? You may have air trapped in the system. If no air trapped, the radiator may be plugged up not allowing proper circulation of coolant.

SOURCE: My 2001 chevy venture van

Make sure you have gotten all the air out of the system by running the car with the cap off for a bit.. also make sure the radiator overflow if at proper level.. next look at your radiator and see if it is plugged up with trash bugs what ever this will slow your cooling big time.. also look between your radiator and your air condition condensor and make sure its clean also there can be trash in there causing it to heat .. also check belts make sure they are tight.. really sounds like you started with air in system and system might be air locked needing to run a bit with cap off when cool. dont take cap off when hot ... make sure over flow is full also... thanks and holler if you need more. SOURCE: Kia Rio overheating although everything seems ok

Possible early signs of a water pump problem. A failing waterpump will circulate coolent when the RPMS are high but when you slow down, so does the waterpump, thereby causing overheating.

My van is overheating and the heater is not blowing hot air.

Possibly the thermostat is locked closed not allowing the fluid to circulate after it gets hot. The water pump might also be nonfunctional, but sometimes a bad water pump will leak.

My 2001 town and country limited is overheating without indication from the gages and has a burnt smell coming through the inside vents of the van.

  • This I understand, a burnt smell coming through your vents, but how do you know it is the engine overheating? You said you have no gauge warning. Is your antifreeze disappearing? In other words are you having to refill the antifreeze? Is the van stopping and steaming? Stalling? The reason I ask is if you are not loosing antifreeze something else could be going on. Antifreeze does not smell "burnt." Antifreeze smells sweet like cinnamon. Give me some more details like what going on other than the smell and how is this effecting the driving of the car?

99 Firebird still overheating after repairs and antifreeze

overheating is most likely a bad thermostat, but the coolant loss is a second big concern. Does the exhaust look like steam? You could have a cracked block and the coolant is leaking into the engine. Also check the oil for contamination.

KIA SEDONA HAS REAR HEAT BUT NOT FRONT HEAT BLOWERS WORK BUT ONLY COLD AIR COMES IN FRONT

This could be a serious problem. Check your coolant level, then check the rear heater lines that supply coolant to the rear heater. They run under the van, over time they rust and leak. Because it is under and to the rear of the van it is hard to notice, i.e. coolant puddles and smell. But please note that this engine has aluminum cylinder heads and does not take kindly to being overheated.

Need to flush the heatercore

your heater core has gone out, thats why there is no heat and thats from leakage of antifreeze. Usually when you can smell burnt antifreeze it usually points to a blown head gasket or cracked head, smell your exhaust and if you smell antifreeze theres your culprit

Radiator fluid evaporation or leak?

Just had the same problem! I have never had any problems out of my van and just had all fluids checked a month ago before going on vacation. One day it just started overheating and I had to urn the heater to pull the heat off of the motor to keep it cool enough to get it home. I put over a gallon of coolant in it and filled up the reserve tank. The next morning I took my kids to school about 4 miles away and my van started to miss really bad and the check engine light would come on every time I pressed down on the accelerator. I took it home and opened the hood and the reserve coolant tank was empty in just 8 miles of travel so I called the dealer and had them pick it up on a rollback since it is still under warranty. The dealer said it was a leak in the rear heater pipes that circulate antifreeze/coolant to the rear of the vehicle to supply heat for the rear heater and the miss was from the heat of the engine burning the spark plugs. So far it is a dealer item only and parts and labor are about $352. The vehicle will not leave any puddles when running while in park, only leak while moving, so they tell me. The dealer bypassed it somehow until my parts come in and my van drives fine. The pipes (maybe hoses, unsure) are actually a series of 3 that must be replaced. I may try to change them myself if they are just hoses.
