If the engine does not start it can be due to several issues and mainly it can be due to poor fuel settings and ignition timings. Also as noted by you if the compression ratio is different in cylinders then this can be bad for the performance of the engine. So it is best to check in the first place the compression on each of the cylinders,if there is difference on them then it must be seen if a correction of the valve settings can make a difference. If not the engine might need a overhauling with inspection of the cylinders.
Once the compression is good then fuel pressure settings- the pump calibration , and also the ignition system and timing must be checked even if the timing belt is in good condition.
I suggest that opinions also must be taken with estimation before you decide or change spares.

Total loss of compression would mean a bent valve. car would be running very rough if that was the case. Or a blown head gasket .The lack of compression is probably from being flooded.Check the intake if it is FULL of oil then really bad. It could be the intake valves have gummed-up due to all that oil in the intake. If so, the thing to do is remove the heads, clean, and check for damage. The engine flooded with gas can bring compression all the way down,Gas washes all of the oil off of the cylinders and that's what seals the rings to the cylinders. You spark plugs are most likely gas fouled too. Also other possibility for no compression or low compression is the cylinder walls gets bad thats why no compression car needs a block. ------------ An engine will not start if it has very low compression. It could be possible that the vehicle is getting flooded with too much fuel causing the cylinder walls to get washed down.

What you should try doing is removing each spark plug and then squirt a small amount of oil (3-4 shots from oil can) into each cylinder and crank it over to re-lubricate the cylinder walls. Then re-check compression. It should jump up and be about double your first reading.

If so then re-install the plugs and try to start it. If it does fire up it is going to smoke very heavily for a few minutes due to all the oil in each cylinders.

--------

Try this , but if that is not helping then ignition coils needs to be replaced. Also get the spark plugs checked. If dirty fouled up and very old, then replace the spark plugs too.----------

This should help.thanks.Helpmech.

Bmw e39 m54 engine defective cam sensors make car impossible to start because very low compression>

Lots of guesswork here.
Firstly, have you checked for compression on all cylinders.
If compression is low or non exisistant then you have a major problem probably caused by the timing chain slipping and causing damage to the valves /pistons etc
I would do this first.

Engine, when cranking, sounds like an engine cranking with spark plugs removed;like no compression.

the bmw 525I/530I ( E39) 2.5 l/3.0L engine id25 6S,30 6S (m54) 2001-2003 does not identify as an interference engine so there should not be valve damage
it is chain driven and you will need special cam shaft tools , tensioner locking tool and other special tools to do the job
basically a job for professionals with the correct tools and bmw knowledge
the first inexpensive job that you can do is to check that the chains haven't broken and that the cam shafts are rotating
next is a compression test to determine if the valves are in good condition
if that is good ( 155 -165 PSI) then run the fault codes to determine what may be failing
after that you will know if it will be expensive to repair

Car was shut off. Minutes later, when attempting to start, the engine cranked freely. Won't start. Not sure where to start looking for problems.

Sounds like a timing chain problem, you could check compression but I think your going to have to take it to a shop regardless. Make sure that the engine is turning over and it's just not the starter spinning that your hearing.

Check battery. Check solenoid. Check starter moter. Check wiring to battery, solenoid, starter.

My 1994 BMW 740i only cranks and never runs.

Have you run the fault codes first as it may not be the fuel pump. Find out what is faulty before you spend good money on what is not faulty.

I have a 1994 BMW 740i. My car only cranks and turns over but will not start up and run

I believe you will have an issue with your injectors. Check your mileage with the manufacturers recommendation on replacement.
Before you do anything, just put into your fuel tank a SLICK 50 Fuel Treatment Additive - half tank of petrol - and take it for a good drive. Read the directions on the box. Probably solve the problem for the time.

2001 dodge durango wont start

Sorry to say it sounds like you cooked the engine.
It has a timing chain, not a timing belt.
And it has direct ignition which means each cylinder has a coil on top of the spark plug. So no distributor.
There is a good chance one of the head gaskets is blown or worse.
It's possible the timing chain has jumped a few teeth and the crank-cam sensors are off line.
I would probably run a compression test first and see if all 8 cylinders have a good level of compression.
If they do, you might have a fuel or ignition problem. If one or more of the cylinders is low on compression, you have major engine problems. The cylinders should be within 25psi of each other and probably over 100 psi each.

My 1995 bmw wont start!

I don't think a 1995 3 series has a timing belt. 100% sure if its the inline 6 cylinder.bmw only used timing belts on two engines. (never replaced one) I would first start with a fuel pressure check to start your diagnosis. From there i'd check to see if you are getting spark and maybe even see if your plugs are fouled. If you have fuel pressure and spark, i'd suspect bad gas.(especially if the problem occured soon after filling up). It may be a good idea to do a compression check if you found no fault with the vehicle.
