The key doesn't turn at all. Not even one click!!! the tumblers are completely jammed. I also just bought the Bently service manual but they don't offer a solution to my problem. I have been searching the web for days and at this stage I know I have only one of two solutions: to drill a small hole where the entry for the pin should be if the key would've turned, then use a pin to remove it; or drill straight through the center of cylinder to destroy the lock tumblers and then turn it to line up with the pin hole, and use the classic method to remove it. Before I attemp either, I need to know if anyone tried them and which one will work better or work at all? I already ordered a new cylinder from dealer so the problem is in removing the old one. Help please.

  • Anonymous Sep 22, 2008

Nevermind. I solved it. For those who face the same problem, here is what I did. I called a locksmith and signed a liability release form for him to even touch the car. I removed the steering covers and the EWS electric ring to clear the way to the mechanical key lock cylinder. I also unplugged the ignition switch wires and removed the airbag fuse just in case. The locksmith used a flat screwdriver with square shaft and clamped it with pliers, then he turned it back and forth till it turned to position II (Run position). He then just put a paper clip and released the cyliner. It was as simple as it sounds. We put the new keyed cyliner in and then the ring and plugged all wires and fuses, and the car started... I was so relieved. No drillng or worse, replacing the whole steering column as the dealer wanted to do and charge me over a$600. I put my solution here as I wished someone has shared there's ans saved me a week of agony. Cheers.

Easy, put the key in the ignition turn it one turn, then get a paperclip or something a little bigger in diameter, there is a small hole on the front of the ignition. put the clip inside the hole & it should release a keyway. then you simply pull the barrell out. you may need to wiggle it a bit to dislodge it.
cheers

Key broke off in ignition, but would turn on when the rest of key was inserted. Now it will not work at all. I'm broke. What would be the cheapest way to go? Go to a dealership, call a locksmith? Is this something a person can fix themselves?

Can't get ingition lock cylinder to lock back into place

  • lancemasters Mar 21, 2011

Not sure how long ago you posted this but I have been trying to get my new lock cylinder from dealership in for over a month. I even went to the dealership and tried to pay them to do it. After waiting over an hour and a half they came out and told me it was the colander that was worn out and for around $600 they could replace it today:))) I kindly said no thank you and they "discounted" their labor time from $100 to $25 for doing nothing... When I got home I tried to put the old one back in. Went in first try bit then I couldn't get it back out, I ended up carefully drilling it out. Next day went back to dealership parts store and told them they either ordered the wrong part or sold me a defected part. They said they had already ordered a new one:) two weeks later I went back to check why it was taking so long and they said it came in and was there... After about 30 minutes they came back and said it got lost somehow and they would overnight order it they would have it tommorow. I called back at end of next day to check if it came in they said no after you left we talked to our shop mechanic and he said they never ordered it because the ignition wasn't the problem it was the coledar:(((
So here's what I ended up doing... I new something was keeping it from going all the way in so I ended up taking my flex shaft(dremel) putting a splitting disk ob and on the lock cylendar behind black plastic ring there's a thin piece of metal sticking up that fits into colander notch. This keeps the cylinder from spinning when turning key... I cut about 1mm off an tried, still nothing. I cut about .5mm off and it went right in first try;))) be careful not to cut too much off... This worked for me and I hope it will help someone else. Makes me wonder how many poor soles have bought a new colander???

Remove the battery for safty

It easy when you no how in my case the key just spin around
some time lock in place position one and half way and the engine stay on. my wife say the engine stay on.

ANY WAY IT TOOK ME TWO DAY I PUT THE PAPER CLIP IN THE HOLE I GOT A LARGE ONE FILE IT DOWN I COULD OF USE A SMALL PAPER CLIP WHEN I REMOVE THE BARREL SO EASY.

NOTE THE BARREL NEED GREASE AND THE LITTLE MECHCANICAL PART OUT SIDE THE BARRAL HAS TO MOVE FREELY SO GOOD GREASE AND RESEAT OF THE BARREL WORK FOR ME.

The reason it took two day i put the pin in the hole at the first position then twist the key clock wize untill it lock.when you move the key anti clock wize key should feel srung in my case some time it was not. keep trying the hole should be between the first position and half way,(1/4 of the way the pin should go in 22mm just short of wiggle it and pull at the key if it is not done right the key will come out i save $80 plus part keep trying..

The sea saw on the barrel is sring loaded the pin in the hole just push one end of the sea saw it so easy when you no how remember 1st position lock
move it 1/4 of the way the hole and the sea saw is just there just wiggle the pin..

SOURCE: my ignition will not turn/ ignition lock cylinder

Not to burst your bubble but this happened three times on my focus. The dealership is your best option and yes, I had to have it towed there. You can try calling the ford customer service line and explain your problem nicely. This is a common problem for the focus and they may extend the warrenty coverage( they did it for me)...you will have to pay 50 to 100 dollars but it beats tearing into the steering column only to find out that you will need to have it towed to the dealership anyways. Been there, done that, wont do it again.

I have a 2004 Alero Oldsmobile if I buy the chipped ignition does it reprogram itself for the anti-theft device

Chipped ignition ? Key's on your car do not have transponder chip . Replacing Keys
The ignition lock cylinder and keys do not contain any coded electronic components. The lock cylinder housing contains the coded electronic components. Changing an ignition lock cylinder or replacing a key is a purely mechanical process which does not affect the vehicle theft deterrent system. To replace an existing key, simply cut a new key to match the existing one. If no keys are available, the lock cylinder must be changed. To change the lock cylinder, simply replace the existing lock cylinder with one of the same type.

How do i replace a ignition switch for a 1992 mercury sable

The ignition switch on Mercury Sable is integrated into the ignition cylinder. When this switch fails, you may need to purchase a special switch from a Ford dealership if the switch used a wireless transponder.

Instructions for NON Functional Cylinder (Cylinder will Not Turn or No Keys ):
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the steering wheel.
3. Using locking pliers, twist the cylinder cap until it separates from the lock cylinder.
4. Using a 3/8 in. (10mm) diameter drill bit, drill down the middle of the ignition lock key slot approximately 13/4 in. (44mm) until the lock cylinder releases from its breakaway base. Remove the lock cylinder and drill shavings from the lock cylinder housing.
5. Remove the retainer, washer, ignition switch and actuator. Thoroughly clean all drill shavings and other foreign materials from the casting.
6. Inspect the lock cylinder housing for damage from the removal operation. If the housing is damaged, it must be replaced.

To install:
1. Replace the lock cylinder housing, if damaged.
2. Install the actuator and ignition switch.
3. Install the trim and electrical parts.
4. Install the ignition lock cylinder.
5. Install the steering wheel.
6. Connect the negative battery cable, then check the lock cylinder operation.

Instructions for Functional Cylinder ( Cylinder will Turn with Key):
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Turn the lock cylinder key to the RUN position.
3. Using a 1/8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or a small drift, depress the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole in the upper steering column shroud (under the ignition lock cylinder) while pulling out on the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder from the column.

To install:
1. Install the lock cylinder by turning it to the RUN position and depressing the retaining pin. Insert the lock cylinder into its housing. Make sure the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder housing.
2. Rotate the lock cylinder using the lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
3. Connect the negative battery cable.

Door Lock:
When a lock cylinder must be replaced, replace both sides as a set to avoid carrying an extra set of keys.
1. Remove the door trim panel and watershield.
2. Remove the clip attaching the lock cylinder rod to the lock cylinder.
3. Pry the lock cylinder out of the slot in the door.

To install:
1. Work the lock cylinder assembly into the outer door panel.
2. Install the cylinder retainer into the slot and push the retainer onto the lock cylinder.
3. Connect the lock cylinder rod to the lock cylinder and install the clip. Lock and unlock the door to check for proper operation.
4. Install the watershield and door trim panel

Hope this helps.

2000 contour

for 98 contour issue. TSB 98-21-14 not covered by warranty

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1999 Cougar . ISSUE: The ignition key may be difficult to insert or remove and/or key chimes may sound with the ignition key removed and driver's door open on some vehicles. This may be caused by internal design characteristics in the ignition lock cylinder increasing insertion/removal efforts which may allow the lock cylinder to stick.
ACTION: Install a revised ignition lock cylinder. The revised ignition lock cylinder should reduce the possibility of high insertion/removal efforts and ensure proper chime function. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Verify customer concern.
  2. Observe the ignition lock cylinder as the key is removed. If the lock cylinder snaps outward to the non-depressed position and the chimes stop sounding, continue to Step 3. If it does not snap outward, replace the ignition lock cylinder with the appropriate cylinder by referring to the Parts Block in this article.
  3. Insert and remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder. If binding or high efforts are encountered, replace the ignition lock cylinder.
  4. From the Parts Block, select a lock cylinder with a part number suffix identical to the center character of the key code of the vehicle. The suffix must match the center key code character to maintain a single key system.
  5. Install the replacement lock cylinder, by referring to the 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual, Section 211-05 or the 1999 Cougar Workshop Manual, Section 211-04. NOTE: KEYS INCLUDED WITH NEW IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS ARE CUT FOR THE IGNITION ONLY. IN ORDER FOR THE KEYS TO FUNCTION IN THE DOOR LOCKS, THE KEYS MUST BE CUT TO THE DOOR CODE OF THE ORIGINAL LOCKSET. THE KEY CODE WILL CHANGE UPON INSTALLATION OF THE REPLACEMENT LOCK CYLINDER (FIGURE 1).

    Figure 1 - Article 98-21-14

NOTE: ADVISE THE CUSTOMER TO DISCARD ALL KEYS THAT WERE CUT TO THE ORIGINAL IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER.
  6. Record the new key code on the repair order and provide to the customer. Advise the customer to record the new key code in a permanent location and to discard all references to the original key code. NOTE: REPLACEMENT IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS ARE SHIPPED WITH NON-PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) KEYS. IF THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH PATS, OBTAIN TWO (2) ROTUNDA KEY BLANKS (OR OTHER FORD AUTHORIZED BLANKS, SUCH AS: ILCO, STRATTEC, CURTIS, HUF, OR VALEO) AND CUT TO THE REVISED KEY CODE. USE OF OTHER UNAUTHORIZED KEYS MAY CAUSE ERRATIC OPERATION OF THE PATS SYSTEM.
  7. Program PATS keys using one of the two following methods:
(1) For vehicles with Integrated PATS (IPATS), function built into the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and built beginning:
  • 2/2/98 Kansas City (Contour/Mystique)
  • 2/16/98 Mexico (Contour/Mystique)
  • All 1999 Cougars
Using the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester equipped with Service card (green) level 3.0 or higher:
  1. From NGS menu, select:
    • Service Bay Functions
    • PCM
    • Enter Security Access (10 minute delay)
    • Ignition Key-Code-Erase
  2. Disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC).
  3. Cycle the first non-programmed key in the ignition to run position for at least 3 seconds and then turn to the off position.
  4. Cycle the second non-programmed key in the ignition to run position. The theft indicator should prove out for 3 seconds.
  5. Verify the vehicle will now start using both keys.
(2) For Contours/Mystiques with Stand Alone PATS and built before:
  • 2/2/98 Kansas City
  • 2/16/98 Mexico
Using the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester equipped with Service card (green) level 1.0 or higher:
  1. From NGS menu, select:
    • Service Bay Functions
    • PATS
    • Ignition Key-Code-Erase (this process may take up to 8 minutes to complete )
  2. Disconnect DLC.
  3. Cycle first unprogrammed key in the ignition to run position. First key will program and allow vehicle to start.
  4. Again cycle first programmed key to run position. Within 15 seconds, remove original key and turn new unprogrammed key to run position. The theft indicator should prove out for 2 seconds. New key will start vehicle.
  5. Repeat this process for additional key programming. NOTE: THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE NOTED FOR THE PART NUMBER BLOCK:
