Would like to replace the starter on my 1991 lexus ls400 and I was told that in order to get to it, the intake manifold will have to be taken out and the starter pulled from the top. However, ai was also told that by removing the heat shield for the exhaust manifold below that you could also access the starter from below. Is this correct? and Is it also possible to access it from below without taking out the intake manifold above?

No, it makes no sense. You have V-8, right? Removing the exhaust manifolds will not provide any help in accessing the starter. The starter is in the middle of the engine.

SOURCE: Replace/fix starter on 1991 Lexus LS400

Not too bad. Not much room, just enough to drop the starter. It is probably easier to go up through exhaust if you can get your exhaust shield off the manifold .
