Engine quit when stopped at stop light. Acted as if it was choking then died. Tried restarting. Turns over strong, no start. Thought maybe no gas. Added gas after about 30 minutes. Started first try. Filled tank, continued driving, choking symptom again but continued running. Later engine quit again. Started back after about 30 minutes. Idle speed has increased. Drove back home. Check engine light on now. 1993 Cherokee, 160000 miles

Sounds like the fuel pump is going out. Replace the filter first, as it's only $10. If that doesn't fix it, then it's probably the pump, which is $250.

the first thing I would do I would check my alternator belt if it runs w pump and alt this could be the problem of overheating and dead battery on the engine part what I do is put a socket at the crankshaft bolt and turn it with a 1/.2 braker bar if it turns the engine is not seiced be sure the engine is off to this tests.
sounds like the head or head gasket is blown. your cylinders may be getting coolant in them which will not only cause the motor to lockup, but also cause bent rods and valves. check your oil dipstick and transmission dipstick to see if it looks like water or coolant is presant, also check the coolant to see if it smells like gas or has any kind of oil in it, if so, your head is likely blown.
I know the 4wd lights flash a code and I have replaced a transfer case control module on one before but as for the clunk and engine dying maybe it is a combination of more than one problem
