My 2000 Dodge Caravan trans started to act irratically. Trans guy changed the Input and Output sensors. Worked fine for 3months, but now the irratic shifting and speedometer/tachometer all together are on the brink... I know the sensors are the problem, but why is the replacement part already acting up ?
Thanks for anyone with experience on this.
Well, I looked into another Replacement Sensors, and cost less than $10 ea. Bought them and installed them myself (not that hard).
The ones the trans mechanic changed looked OK, but my cheaper replacements WORKED....!!!
And here we are more than a year later... never another issue since ! So, the mechanic's parts either were not the right ones, or inferior quality.Well, I looked into another Replacement Sensors, and cost less than $10 ea. Bought them and installed them myself (not that hard).

The trans speed sensors are on top of the trans. One closest to the engine is the input. One to the right is the output. On your drivers side of van, follow the trans fill tube down to the trans. The input is just under the trans lines going into the trans. output is 8in to the right. Use 1in socket to remove. 20lbs torque to reinstall. Make sure you replace the o-ring on them.
Only so many places these trans 41 TE can leak on the vans. Lines on top, speed sensors(input, output)one is below the lines the other is to right of the lines. Dipstick tube, trans solenoid gasket, Oil pan & extension gasket. Wipe off & clean area very well. Lines leaking, check clamps first before replacing. Speed sensor leaking replace o ring, Dipstick tube replace o ring, Trans solenoid replace gasket, Extension plate replace gasket If the pan is leaking you change the trans filter & put a gasket on the pan. The book says RTV on the pan, but FelPro make a gasket for the pan $6.99. Use a Chrysler trans filter!!!! O rings for sensors, tube around $3 each, trans solenoid gasket $3, extension gasket $10, Filter $11 + gasket $7 & 4qts trans fluid if doing the filter or extension gasket.
Theres 2 they are on top of the trans. The input is closest to the engine, below the trans lines going into the trans. The output is to the right of the lines about foot still on top. 1 inch deep well socket need to remove. 20 lbs torque. Make sure to use new o-ring
Dodge is wildly known for there trans problems 3rd gear is the default gear or what they call the limp home mode.trans failure is the most likley cause I put 3 transmissions in my 99 before I got rid of it
there are two speed sensors that determine when to shift. input and output speed sensor. there are black and gray and located on the front of the trans under the air filter elements. they are pretty cheap, and i would suggest a trans fluid change too.
A 3 SPD TRANS DOES NOT HAVE INPUT/OUTPUT SENSORS..ONLY A VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR..IT IS LOCATED ON TRANS EXTENSION HOUSING WHERE RIGHT SIDE AXLE COMES OUT OF TRANS..1 BOLT AND A WIRE CONNECTOR
same thing happened in my dodge, come to find out it was the transmission module in the computer, computer needs changing out. I got the true reading from auto zone, transmission shop couldnt get right reading for a year and a half, try auto zone first, they can pinpoint your problem and its free, good luck
it sounds as though your transmission input and output sensors are faulty.they are located on the driver side of transmission.input at front of trans.output at rear of transmission. normally if input sensor is faulty trans will stay in limp mode. if output sensor is faulty speedo will not register. they both resemble temp sensors with elec connectors
