I have a 1986 Cutlass Supreme with a 1986 Chevy C10 engine. Im having trouble with the car shifting into Drive. The vehcile will shift fine from P R N but when it shifts into drive from reverse its a hard and very delayed shift. What else could i do besides replacing the transmission?

Replacing the transmission is a last resort
problem could be dirty oil or spool valve problems or low oil pressure problems
take it to a professional autom transmission shop for a proper diagnosis

SOURCE: 1995 cutlass supreme transmission

It physically will fit and bolt up,but there are many different ratio, and drive and driven sprocket tooth counts, different final drive ratios, all monitored by the computer with electronic speed sensors. If the trans from the 95 has a different ratio than the 93,the computer will set gear ratio error codes, and possibly put the trans in a failsafe mode, stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear.On the transmission case, down by where the passenger side axle would go in,is a thin metallic tag, maybe 2"x 3",and it has bar codes, and also a series of numbers and letters. The numbers and letters, large cap,are the final drive gear ratio code. They should match on the two transmissions in question.

SOURCE: need to change fuel filter on 1986 cutlass supreme

You'll find it in the carburator. Unhook the fuel feed line from the front of the carb and undo the large nut directly where the fuel line connects to. The filter is there.Pay attention to how the filter comes out and put the new one back in the same way. Hope this helps.

My transmission will go forward and shift through all gears just fine, but it will not go into reverse when i try to back up.

Shift cable seized, rusty, or out of adjustment--have qualified person check & fix. If not this--transmission may be bad.

What is a shift solenoid!

A shift solenoid is an electrical switch that is located in the transmission on the valve body assembly.
This solenoid is commanded on or off based on inputs from the electronic control module or "ECM".
These commands are based on inputs from multiple sensors and the predetermined shift patterns of the computer program. Any diagnostic trouble codes (check engine light) need to be diagnosed first as other sensors may cause shifting concerns.
I hope this answers your question, additional diagnostics need to be performed.

My 1983 cutlass v6 won't shift into drive. It will shift into revers

you might check the transmission fluid, under the hood on the left side i think... shift from park to reverse a few times, put the transmission in neutral and leave the engine running, check transmission fluid level, if the fluid is good then transmission may be out

Trans doesnt like reverse

That is a good trans - damn near bullet proof, change the fluid and filter and replace it with B&M trick shift or ((Hurst Hot Shift fluid)) these fluids preserve the bands and gives firm shifts instead of the lazy slip into gears , you will notice a really big difference in the efficiency of the trans and nice shifts as well - only need to change whats in thew pan, also while you are under there check your linkage because sometimes it needs re adjusted (adjust on the thing that is a round cylindrical thing with a bolt on the side - your shift rod goes through this) have a partner get in ((after)) you loosen the bolt and have them put the needle on the dash centered on the (P) - retighten
