Question about 1996 Geo Tracker 2 Door

BRAKE SYSTEM Brake light on ,master cylinder empty,leak in part just in front of passenger rear tire. Need to know name of part and approximate cost to fix. Son-in-law replaced front brakes in June. Vehicle has 84,000 miles.

Hi, the light is on because of the leak in your brakes,the part that need to be replaced is call wheel cilinder ,just ask for it by the car year and model ,it should not be to expensive ,(twenty to fourty $) be sure you have the brakes bleed afther installig it.GoodLuck

Sounds like the brake wheel cylinder is leaking check the master cylinder and it will low or empty.

Rear passenger brake dosen't work


Are there two brake fluid reservoirs? And are both full? This would be a split-diagonal brake system-front driver and rear passenger are one brake system. Front passenger and rear driver are the other system. You have the one system working-the front passenger and rear driver side works. You will have to keep bleeding the rear passenger side and the front driver side-always start farthest from the master cylinder, but if that wheel just won't bleed air out, make sure the driver front is working and bleeds good. If all else fails, there are pressure bleeder kits available, I don't know the cost, but they work great. They are also a one man bleeding job, as I understand.

Replaced some brake line, rear pads and one rear wheel cylinder. Now no pressure and nothing happening when trying to bleed.


Does the car have ABS ? And does it have an equalizer block for the 4 wheels ?
It sounds like the ABS has been affected, or there is an equalizer block that is stuck on the front wheels only.
Can you open the bleeder or the rear line on the master cyl and get fluid to come out by depressing the pedal ?

No pressure in the brake line


Tom,
When the master cylinder [just below the plastic reservoir where you added the fluid] goes empty, air gets in it. Since air can be compressed [unlike liquids] the system does not generate any pressure. You may have to bleed the entire brake system to get the air out. Before you go to all that trouble, there is a short cut you can try. Have someone watch the fluid reservoir [with cap removed] for air bubbles while you gently press the brake pedal about 1/2 way down and release it. This will allow the air trapped in the master cylinder to escape upwards. Repeat until no bubbles are seen in the reservoir and you have a firm pedal. This trick may require up to 50 pumps of the pedal. The truck must be on level ground or with the front of the truck slightly above the rear.
Did you find any brake fluid on the ground? Is so, you must fix that leak. If no fluid was found on the ground, then the leak is the rear seal of the master cylinder. The fluid gets sucked into the power brake booster [big, black metal can behind the master cylinder], then into the engine and out the exhaust. If this is the case, you need to replace the master cylinder to fix the leak. Follow the instructions which will come with the replacement master cylinder to "bench" bleed it prior to installation.

Hi Chris, The brake system is basically very simple. If you have duel braking on your vehicle, the usual method is having two brakes operate on the front with for example the left rear and the other system will also operate two front and the right rear. This type of system will have two calipers on each of the front wheels. The tandem system works in a slightly different way, having the forward part of the cylinder pressurizing the rear brakes and the rear part of the cylinder pressurizing the front. I think under the circumstances you are describing, I would have a friend sit inside and pump the brakes repeatedly until the system becomes pressurized (maybe twenty thirty times of pumping the brake pedal) and then ask him or her to keep it pushed firmly down until you find out where its leaking. The amount of brake fluid you report having been sed would indecate a severe leakage. Check the lower parts of the rear wheels for signs of leaking wheel cylinders and then dito for the front wheels. Any signs of wetness at these areas and along the brake system (the plumbing or pipe work) will indicate where the leakage is. If you cannot identify a wheel which is leaking, carefully inspect around and blow the master cylinder and if this no sign go along the fluid lines, taking special note of where the damaged pipe was repaired. If there is a blockage in the line, air may be trapped at that point causing difficulty in pressurizing. Once the place of leakage has been identified it must be attended to before bleeding the system. When bleeding, begin with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder, and work your way back to the master cylinder one wheel at a time, until you reach the closest.Keep in mind that you may find it required to pump the pedal many many times before opening the bleed nipple.Regards John

My brake pedal goes all the way to the floor there is no any brake oil leak i replace the brake master cylinder i bleed the system but still the same what is the correct procedure to bleed brake system...


fill master cylinder, start at right rear. the way I do it is make sure cap is back on master cylinder. pump the brakes a few times then hold them. have another person open the bleeder valve at the tires until brakes go to floor. hold them down until bleeder is retightened but be sure master cylinder is not out of fluid. then go to left rear and do the same procedure, then right front, then left front. check fluid and if air is all out there should be brakes. good-day ! THIS IS HOW I HAVE ALWAYS DONE IT ! heres a little trick of sorts. you can change a master cylinder, and if you bench bleed it first. and no fluid is lost from the master cylinder lines you do not need to bleed the whole system. but make sure cylinder is full of fluid before putting on vehicle and all air is out of master cylinder.

How can i check out the master cylinder ? i have very little petal , only left front is catching.


Your master cylinder in front and rear. Drive your car to an empty lot to a bare spot and push hard on the brakes. Look for brake fluid starting to drip on the ground. Also look on the back side of your tires to look for brake fluid tracking due to a a slow leak.

first thing have some one push the brake for you. every time thay push. look very close at each tire to see if you see brake fluid then look from passenger side looking at the driver side frame if you find no leaks any ware all ales its the master cylinder

Drained break fluid and pedal goes to floor, i have a 95 dodge neon i also have Bleed all the wheels starting with the rear pass side it is normally the furthest from the master cyl then the other rear...


start from the rear driver side, and then the rear passenger side, and the front passenger side,and then the driver side make sure you keep plenty of fluid in the master cylinder during bleeding proccess

The brake cylinder in the right rear tire started leaking. I changed it and bled the brakes., now they won't stop and will go all the way to the floor. where and how do I adjust them? THANK YOU jOE!


You may need to further bleed the brakes. Something pumping to bleed the brakes can **** in air at the brake fluid reservoir. Try using a vacuum pump to **** out brake fluid from the release screw at the brake side. Make sure you always have enough fluid at the reservoir.
