Hi michael here i have just purchased a 2000 hyundai santa fe and it is going into limp home mode. there are no engine light coming on or is there any warnig when it is ging to happen.when it does it it will change into 3rd gear (auto trans) and will stay in that gear can change manually it to second but that is it. if you turn the car off and restart it it will shift back into third and stay there or it might drive perfect. oil levels are good had it to a mechanic and put a computer on it and it came up with unreconizable code. woundering if there were any handy hints out there

What would cause a 2004 hyundai santa fe suddenly fall into limp mode?

It has a failure in the engine or transmission, this was sensed by the control computers and to avoid any further damage it put you in the low power limp mode. You need to have the system control modules scanned for fault codes to see what went wrong.

I assume your vehicle is 3.5 V6?... What you describe is 'LIMP HOME' mode of the Electronic Throttle System. Have it PROPERLY diagnosed by a qualified Hyundai Technician.... ONLY SOLUTION ( NOT JUST THE BEST SOLUTION).

''check engine light'' illuminated, 1004 Hyundai, Santa Fe

If you live in the US, take it to qany Auto Zone store and thy will read the codes off for you, I would suspect any right thinking competitor would do the same, check if you don't have one near by.

Hope this is of some help.
