The only thing i can think of is the vent for the fuel tank. this can sometimes give a code but if it fixes itself the code will remove its self but the engine light will stay on. it can also be an electrical fault if it does this when you turn on lights or heater blowers. this can sometime doe this aswell ecu reads a power drain, this can be down to 3 things battery alternator or a bad earth. hope this helps.

First, all these mechanics that you took your car to, did they have the full Volvo diagnostic software? In other words, were they able to access ALL computer systems that the lights were on for? If not, take your car to the Volvo dealer or a shop that has the proper software.
If the alternator does not charge or drops out while the engine is running, it will cause ALL the warning lights to come on.
Did you try adjusting the dash light dimmer control?

Wow! I think u have some sort of record-4 years w/ check engine light on! Ok, 1st u need to have the battery checked. If u take it out u can bring it to an auto parts store where they will check it for free. Your radio may work, and your lights may go on, but u still can have a dead battery (not enough power to turn the engine over). So 1st thing to check is the battery and all the connections to and from it. Let me know how the battery checks out, then we can proceed to get your car running again.

It's in the console under the coin holder, in front of the gear shifter. You have to remove the coin holder and you will see it.

Replace the cat you have ran it for years with a bad 02 sensor so now replace it and you will get better performance and better gas miliage. Never run a check engine light fo a long time it's telling you something is wrong. youer lucky you did not destroy the engine.
