My 2000 S Type Jaguar needs an engine! The mechanic who checked indicated the lifters are weak and water seems to have entered the engine, hence it is advisable to get a new engine. Where can I get a good used engine to buy? Again, do I need to change the transmission? the mileage is in excess of 250k!

SOURCE: Gearbox fault of Jaguar S Type

unfortunately when that code, and that gear box fault light comes on, its pretty much game over for the transmission. It only a matter of time before performance of the transmission gets worse and worse. BUT that transmission is VERY easy to replace, i would check out a few trustworthy independent shops to give you a better price! I am usually a die-hard dealership, having been working at this jaguar land rover dealership for the last 2 years, but you are pretty much for sure going to be a cheaper price on the labor and like i said it is a pretty easy task.

My only precaution MAKE SURE IF YOU GETTING A USED TRANSMISSION THAT YOU GET SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY ON IT. Too many times have I seen customers loose thousands of dollars paying someone to put a used engine or transmission and have it fail almost right away.

2001 S Type V8- moderate to loud ticking sound in the engine (sounds like metal to metal contact). The ticking is constant, at idle or throttled. One mechanic thought it might be the #8 lifter spring?

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. That is possible. More then likely, it is a associated with the valve lifter. If it was a rod, you would hear a knocking sound compared to the ticking sounds a bad lifter gives off. As far as which lifter it is, the only way to know for sure if by taking off the valve cover and examining the lifters. You are in the right area though. Check your lifters and you should fine what is causing the ticking. Put all your focus on that area. Your friend sounds like he knows what he is talking about so he may be able to help you work on it if you are not able.

My car says tramission fault

Could be fluid, pressure, electrical or mechanical.

When fluid low and you brake hard or accelerate hard, fluid runs away from oil pick up and air enters system. This allows clutches to slip and weak band apply pressures.

In any case you need a shop or dealer to scan the transmission module to pull the codes.

Many case this is water in the electrical connections to the transmission under the car.

Pull up rear floor carpet and trunk covering...check for water. Common problem with Jaguar.
