Have 2002 outback with bad vibration on gear , the engine runs good , I did replaced all mounts , still the same problem, help please.

Get a friend to open the hood and look at the engine go up or down in the engine compartment when the brakes are firmly applied and switching between reverse and drive. Look for the motor mounts for behavior where tears exist in the rubber.

Good call on the engine mounts, this problem has had a lot of TB owners scratching their head. Hope you used genuine GM mounts, aftermarket mounts tend to crush too much sending you back with the same problem you started with. With aftermarket mounts, the engine will not be as high as needed, the rubber isn't as stiff. Seen this many times. The other thing to check is you tranny mounts. Engine and tranny mounts are usually the culprit with vibration while in gear and stopped with TB's. What type of plugs did you install? Have you cleaned your throttle body?

On the 2002, head gaskets were the subject of a recall. They can go bad almost anytime, usually after 30k, but a good mechanic can take care of it, especially if they torque the mounting bolts properly, but it can take a good number of mechanic hours and cost. The timing belt needs replacing around 100k along with associated parts, a cost you can get quoted. The Outback is a nice car and runs very well if maintained.

The first thing to do is make sure that your vehicle is not due for basic maintenance. Plugs,wires,air/fuel filters. After that you can check to make sure your engine and transmission mounts are in good shape. You can do this with the help of a friend. Open the hood and have your buddy put the car in gear while holding the brake. Have your pal put the vehicle in neutral and then into reverse without letting go of the brake. Your engine should not move very much. It is normal for the engine to move maybe about a quarter of an inch but not much more. If the engine jumps and starts vibrating when thrown into gear, You more than likely have bad mounts or a bad mount somewhere. These mounts are made of rubber and fairly simple to replace. Visually inspect them to make sure they are not cracked or broken. If you replace the mounts,make sure to remove and replace them one at a time. You don't want your engine falling out of the car!!!! I would suspect a mount. Either motor or trans. Also check lateral mount on top of motor to firewall. Good luck and have a great day.

my 2000 mustang 3.8 also had a bad vibration. after many trial and errors we replaced the harmonic balancer..not too hard but requires the "special" tools...and you have to buy it from the manufacturer. my car ran like a dream.

It sounds like either the throwout bearing or the presser plate is going bad, or needs adjusted.

I would check out to see if the exhaust system is grounding out against the body somewhere

Did you recently replace the axles on the vehicle? This problem commonly occurs in Subarus when you replace the axles with non-OEM parts. The only fix seems to be to swap out the axles for OEM parts. Search the forums at subaruoutback.org for many stories of the same condition and some theories on why non-OEM axles cause the problem.

IS YOUR LOUD VIBRATION A LOUD RATTLE IF SO IT COULD BE YOUR CAT BREAKING UP THIS WILL CAUSE BAD RUNNING ..GIVE YOUR ENGINE A GOOD REV 3 or 4 TIMES OUT OF GEAR AND LISTEN FOR A RATTLE,,,,, HOPE THIS HELPS IF NOT CHECK THAT THE EXHAUST IS NOT BLOCKED ?? BEST OF LUCK-ELL BOY.
