I have a 1995 Toyota Corolla. Theres a AC button on the AC panel that pushes in to turn on the compressor for the Cold Air can come on when the AC is turned on. This button has a small green light that comes on,thats when the cold air is working but it goes an turns off when pushed in it started doing that more and more. Now it does come on at all. I replaced the button but it does the same thing just comes on and immediately turns off so the cold air does come on.

sounds like the compressor is locked up,just unplug the wire at the ac compresor,it will need fixed in summer ,$$$,but it will be ok with no ac. The pump runs on defrost to dry the air in order to aid in defrosting. That's why it does that on defrost. The sparks are from the clutch trying to turn a frozen pump. Just unplug the pump.
My 2003 Toyota Camry AC often starts blowing hot air and the AC light starts blinking. I don't know why the following process works, but it does. Using the temp selector (left) reduce the temperature all the way down to Max Cold and then push the Auto button. It will start blowing out very cold air. After a little while push the temp selector to the desired temperature.
the ac clutch relay is the problem. It is located in the under hood fuse box. It is a $10 part. The relay will make a clicking sound when activated but the contacts inside are burnt causing no electrical flow to the ac compressor. Simply unplug and replace. The relay is labeled M/G CLT .
replace or blow out the cabin air filter as well. It is located behind the glove box. Instructions are in your owners manual.
does the car have freon in it? or do you have the belt around it correct? the wiring is no use, your gonna have to take your dash out to find it, very frusterating.
The air flow does not 'increase' with the recirc button pressed. The fan motor blows at specific speeds, no matter whether fresh or recirc is selected. The recirc feature is there so that you do NOT admit 'fresh/hot' air from the outside into the AC box. In short, the recirc feature is to re-use, or, recirculate the existing air in the car. When it is properly working, on a hot day, the recirc selection should drop the internal temperature at the center air vent about 6 degrees lower than with the fresh selected.
AC units in vehicles are sensative components. It is highly recommended that a certified mechanic recharge or repair your system. As I recommend to others for system problems and malfunctions, I suggest taking your car to a mechanic or local auto parts store and have a diagnostics test done to determine what this problem (if any) is found. It may just be the switch in the swtich board behind the dash. You mentions a noise and a smell, which to me, indicates that the compressor (AC pump) is now faulty, however this will only be determined upon diagnosis by a certified mechanic.
