I am attempting to remove/reinstall the Evaporator Core in a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2 coupe. Am I going to be able to do so without removing the entire dash? In other words, will I be able to access the Evap Core by removing only the black plastic cover panels beneath the dash? Also, is there an easily explainable order of parts removal that will be beneficial for me to know? Thank You.

In order to replace the evap core, you will have to remove the entire dash. A guideline, or general order of parts removal would be:

  • Remove lower panels beneath the dash.
  • Remove the lower dash panel below the steering wheel.
  • Remove the glove box.
  • Remove the radio and bezel surrounding it.
  • Remove the instrument cluster and bezel surrounding it.
  • Lower the steering column.
  • Remove the passenger airbag. Make sure you disconnect the battery for safety.
  • At this point you're getting close you should be able to start removing all the bolts that secure the dash.
Good luck, that's a pretty big undertaking.

The reason in why you must evacuate the a/c system with an a/c machine before you can remove the heater core is because the evaporator is located inside of the heater core box assembly. So before the heater core box assembly can be removed the a/c system must be evacuated then you can disconnect the a/c lines that go through the firewall to the evaporator.

Our front ac is not working and back is cold in our 1999 GMC suburban, we tried putting freon and it didn't work
Dual zone front/rear ac systems have 2 evaporator cores. And 2 orifice tubes, which are just inline
filters. Either your front evaporator core or orifice tube is probably stopped up.

Sometimes you can get to the evaporator cores without removing them from the vehicle, and clean it.
Evaporator cores do get stopped up sometimes, because the blower motor pulls in air with dust and debris from outside, and the air is cooled when it passes through the evaporator core.

But evaporator cores are a nightmare to replace, you usually have to remove lots of stuff under the dash and lots of stuff under the hood to remove them.

How to replace the heater core on a 97 chevrolet cavalier
If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.

  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

1999 chevrolet cavalier air-conditioning failure. Assume evaporator coil leakage. Have no technical manual. How to access the evaporator coil inside, under the dashboard?
Compressor usually leaks freon on the Cavalier. Hard to see the leak. But that is usually the culpret.

Need to replace heater core. 91 Cavalier RS, 4 cyl., 2 litre
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
  2. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
  3. Remove the bolt connecting evaporator lines to evaporator.
  4. Remove the evaporator lines from the evaporator.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  6. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Remove the evaporator case drain tube.
  9. Remove the inside and outside module attaching bolts and the accumulator mounting bracket bolt.
  10. Remove the IP carrier.
  11. Remove the floor air outlet.
  12. Disconnect the wiring harness from the HVAC module assembly
  13. Disconnect the electrical connections at the following locations:
  1. Remove the HVAC module assembly screw (2) at the top of the module from the mounting bracket. (1).
  2. Disconnect the gray source vacuum line (1). IMPORTANT: DO NOT tilt HVAC module assembly or coolant may leak out.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Evaporator Core Removal
NOTE: The evaporator core is serviced as a core and housing assembly. The evaporator core, internal doors, seals and door linkage are included with the housing. Transfer the blower motor and wheel assembly, heater core and cover, dash panel seals and vacuum actuators to the new housing.
  1. Remove the rear seat airflow duct (18C420). For additional information, refer to Section 412-01 .
  1. Remove the instrument panel (04320). For additional information, refer to Section 501-12 .
  1. Drain the coolant from the radiator so that the coolant level is below the heater core (18476). For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 .
  1. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 .
  1. Loosen the screw and disconnect the electrical connector from the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650).
  1. Disconnect the heater water hoses (18472) from the heater core.
  1. Disconnect the vacuum supply hose.
  1. Disconnect the condenser to evaporator tube and the evaporator to accumulator tube spring lock couplings from the A/C evaporator core (19860). For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 .

  1. Remove the ignition/shifter interlock cable from the bracket and the shifter interlock cam.
  1. Remove the instrument panel defroster opening grille assembly.
    1. Lift upward to release the instrument panel defroster opening grille assembly from the instrument panel.
    1. Disconnect the two electrical connectors (one each side).
    1. Remove the instrument panel defroster opening grille assembly.
  1. Remove the instrument panel cowl top screws.
  1. Remove the RH instrument panel support to cowl side nut.
  1. Remove the LH instrument panel support to cowl side bolts.
  1. Loosen the LH instrument panel support to cowl side captive bolt.
  1. Position the instrument panel away from the cowl.
    • Disconnect the electronic air temperature control (EATC) hose from the heater plenum.
  1. NOTE: Two technicians are required to carry out this step.
    NOTE: Check the cowl top clips for damage, looseness, or stripped fasteners.
    Remove the instrument panel (04320).
  1. Drain the coolant from the radiator so that the coolant level is below the heater core (18476). For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 .
  1. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 .
  1. Loosen the screw and disconnect the electrical connector from the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650).

How do i remove cavalier window motor
from what i know you have to drill the rivets out. i've found that its easiest with the window 3/4 of the way down. here's a link on an 02 sunfire that looks to be the same as the cavalier.

Replacing a heater core
YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE DASH BOARD. IT WILL BE BEHIND THE GLOVE BOX. LOOK UNDERNEATH THE DASH AND YOU WILL NEED TO REMOVE A PANEL TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE HEATER CORE. THE PANEL WILL BE ABOVE THE PASSENGERS FEET ON THE FIREWALL.

Heater core
You have to pull the dash and all the lower fascia, then remove the box that houses the Heater Core Take the clamps off the heater hoses from the engine compartment side of the firewall and disconnect the heater hoses. Disconnect the bracket that holds the heater core in place from the inside of the passenger compartment (if present.) Carefully remove the heater core and discard it. Install a new heater core reversing the above steps.
