I have a 1992 Ford F150 4x4 with a 4.9L, 5 speed manual trans., 195k mileage. When I place the trans in neutral and start to release the clutch it seems like it is still in gear and will make a noise or start moving. I can shift into 3rd and slowly move the shifter down towards neutral and get it in a position so it doesn't make a noise and seems to be in neutral. I have also noticed it will pop out of gear sometimes while driving, is hard to shift into gear sometimes, and when in reverse and backing up it will **** and stall sometimes. I have changed the fluid and noticed a small amount of fine metal on the drain magnet.

The first thing I would do is to replace the master cylinder as the compensating port may be blocked causing this problem. It is an indication of a worn clutch but having this problem at my expense I learnt to do the cheap fix first as clutch kits are worth about 5 times the price of a m/cyl.. Normally hydraulic clutches are not adjustable
If you swapped out the auto for a manual trans the car might have a neutral start safety switch preventing the starter from engaging. This would not be something you would have on a manual transmission. Instead the manual would have the Clutch Safety switch which will only allow the starter to engage if the clutch is pressed in. On an automatic it won't allow the engine to turn over unless it's in Park or Neutral. I would locate the plug for the neutral start safety switch for the old automatic transmission and bypass it.
The clutch is not releasing fully when changing gears. Does the pedal go down quite a way before it seems to be contacting anything? The reason the forward speeds don't make noise is that they have synchromesh gears, which is a pre-engagement mechanism that allow smooth noiseless shifts (up to a point anyway!). I think this a hydraulic clutch mechanism and the lower slave cylinder at the clutch bell housing is the adjusting point for correcting the clutch free play. It should be set so that the internal release arm is nearly touching the throwout bearing inside the bell housing. The problem may also be that the slave cylinder is loose on it's mounting. The clutch pedal should move about 1/2 to 3/4 inch before it starts to push on the shaft from the master cylinder. Hope some of this helps!
on the left side of trans theres a blue and white plug with either tthree or fuor wires unplugg after stall and snapp rev the engine that should release the lock up converter how ever if you have this problem it should be replaced tcc solenoid ..... if you dont the trans can over heat on long trips not that hard to replace also beetter fuel mileage ther is aside cover pan remove pan and replace the part. hope this helps. I would say that a bearing froze up or something along those lines. So its not dead but you cannot split the case so finding and replacing it would be loads of fun.
this sounds like an adjustment issue. you did not mention the mileage...The clutch is released by a bearing, this release bearing needs to come back off of the fingers of the clutch pressure place, early wear and noise happens.
Near the end of the clutch life, you may find that you cannot release any more, if your model is adjustable.
