That distributor is an easy one. You need to connect the harness attached to the distributor housing to the cap. There is a marking on the cap that says "Batt" Connect that to the hot lead from the ignition switch that is on (with 12V present) and off with switch off. Likely the connector and wire are still in the engine compartment somewhere near the distributor. The other lead connection is marked "tach" you don't need to connect it anywhere but can attach a hand held or on dash tachometer to it.
If you get no spark from the distributor, either the module inside it is bad (no test for that. they are either good or bad) or one of the wires coming from the pickup coil that attach to the module has broken (common on those). (assuming good or new cap, rotor and coil).
It's a very simple and reliable distributor. In fact I'm using one on a 305 Monte Carlo racemobile right now. (with MSD coil, cap and rotor)!!!

Your Impala has a lead that goes to the ignition coil. If you attach that lead to the "batt" side of the new distributor, it will work but I'm pretty sure there is a resistor built into that line to protect the coil from overheating, So, though it will work, likely you won't get all the spark voltage you can from the new coil. All you need to do to correct that is to run a new wire from the ignition switch to the coil and bypass that factory wire. Just thought I'd clarify that. A '61 is definitely not a '78!!!

Hey , just take the positive wire from the coil you are removing and feed it to the + terminal on the HEI dist. cap.the other terminal under there is for your tachometer. If you are mounting a master kill switch in the bumper for drag racing- attatch the kill wire to the tach terminal also.
Thats it you just plug the three wire pigtail from the dist. base(pickup) to the cap and you are off.
Remember firing order is 18436572 in a clockwise direction. to find #1 remove #1 plug and have someone"bump" the engine over while holding your finger over the hole-carefull. then line up the slotted mark on the crank pulley with the big notch on the timing indicator. Good luck

You shouldn't need a spark box because thee coil is located in the dist. cap. You need to run a 12v switched power source to the side of the dist. cap that is marked dist. if it isn't maked it is the term. that is on the front right of the conector pad. the one on the left is for hooking up a tach.
