Hi.

it is possible you have a blocked oil filter if this was not changed.
if the oil goes through the filter bypass, this will give low pressure.

or you may simply have a faulty pressure switch.

i would check these first before doing anything else.

please feel free to ask again if this does not cure the problem.

Low oil pressure doen't mean low in oil, it means low in pressure. Dump one quart oil and add one quart of RISLONE for oil.

2000 Mitsubishi eclipse the oil light came on and my car shut down. I added 1 quart of oil and it was full but the car still won't start.

The oil light does not indicate the car is low on oil (based on your discription) it indicates the oil pressure is low, the no start is most likely due to this low pressure and the fuel pump has been cut off to prevent damage to the engine from low oil pressure. Please have a shop locate the cause of the low oil pressure warning and repair it as needed. It could be a false light or a real one, which means if you drove it very far you may have damaged the engines bearings.

Answer
NO: 08-36-99
SUBJECT: Engine Oil Pressure Light Flicker
DATE: Oct. 15, 1999
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves adding a terminal/wire/vent to the oil pressure switch connector.

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.7L ENGINE.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
With a hot engine the oil pressure light may be on or flicker on at idle.

DIAGNOSIS:
Verify engine oil pressure as described on page 9-21 of the 1999 Concorde/Intrepid/LHS/300M service manual (Publication No. 81-270-9140). If engine oil pressure is within specification perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:
Qty Part No. Description
1 05017800AA Wire Terminal/Vent

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
Raise vehicle on a suitable hoist.
Remove engine oil pressure switch connector from switch.
Remove sealing dart from the empty cavity at the rear of the connector.
Pull terminal locking ring outward from front (switch) side of connector to gain access to terminal locking tabs.
Install wire terminal/vent, p/n 05017800AA, in place of the removed sealing dart. Slide locking ring back into place.
Attach the connector back on the oil pressure switch.
Spot tape the wire/vent to follow the harness towards the top of the engine compartment.

THE OIL LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND WHEN I ADDED 1/2 QT NOW IT IS KNOCKING REALLY BAD AND SOUNDS LIKE THE ENGINE IS GOING TO BLOW UP

you have low oil pressure, so adding oil will not cure the light, if the engine is knocking u have damaged the engine bearings and it will need to be torn down and rebuilt.

All fluids, tires, etc, checked out.

The check engine light doesn't monitor those things, it's an emissions warning. monitors a host of things that are emissions related. You need to have it checked by a technician. The most common cause is a loose (or defective) gas cap. Make sure it clicks when you fill up. As for being 1/4 qt low on oil, don't add that small of an amount. Only add if it's a full quart low. If you check it soon after the engine has been running it'll show low because there's still a lot of oil upstairs in the engine. The dipstick measures what's down low in the oil pan. Also don't add anything to the radiator; only add to the overflow jar. It's marked high and low; those are actually temperature dependent marks, it should be at the high mark when the engine is warm and low when the engine is cold. Coolant expands and contracts with temperature. Don't add straight H2O either; that should be 50-50 coolant/water. They'll do that when you get the oil changed.

I have a 1986 nissan 300zx non turbo. oil prssure will not build up. keep addin oil but all its doing is smoking out the exhaust. acts like the strainer on the fuel pump might be stopped up. can i clean...

Dear number601513: DANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Adding oil is not going to make the oil pressure build up by adding more. The system is slightly more than a 4 qt system with an oil filter change. By adding oil, you raise the levels in the engine to areas where it is not designed to collect. Consequently, it is prone to leaking and can smoke by picking up oil through the pcv.
The fuel pump has NO relationship to it's oil pressure. The only relationship would be through providing enough fuel to power the engine speed above 600 RPM which would and should be more than adequate speed to drive the oil pump. The oil pump on the VG-30 is located at the front of the engine and is the last component which is installed prior to to installing the timing belt gear. The pump is crank shaft driven, so it is a positive drive unit and not very prone to failure. The oil pickup tube which is bolted to the bottom of the pump, is sealed by an "O" ring. This is a probable place for it to loose prime. The screen at the bottom of the pick up tube could be full of sludge which limits the flow of oil, thus keeping the oil pressure dangerously low. One suggestion prior to condemning the engine oil pressure, is to do a mechanical oil pressure test. You can remove the oil pressure sending unit and screw a mechanical oil pressure guage in it's place. The threads are not metric, but NPT tapered design. You can buy mechanical oil pressure gauge kits relitavely cheap and make a test tool with one. Due to the fact that the oil pressure gauge is electric, they can give misleading readings. If your readings are down in the 8-10 PSI area @ idle this is bare minimum, when you raise the engine speed, the oil pressure should reach 40-60 PSI. Make sure you bleed the air out ot the oil line going to the gauge beause "AIR" compresses and will give you a false reading.
I hope this is informative. Good luck.

Loss of oil/oil pressure and fluctuating oil pressure

could be that the screen in the oil pan where the oil is taken up is clogged. not certain--maybe oil change?

Burning oil, but dont know why

Nowdays 1 Qt. in 3000 miles, really isn't that bad, even some new vehicles claim that's normal. I know with my current vehicles, both at approx. 150,000-160,000 miles, they won't use any for first while after an oil change, but then after mileage starts adding up again, they start to use a little, approx.I Qt, every 1000 miles or so, until it's changed again. I've switched to the high mileage oil, just for piece of mind, as they say it revives seals, and has added protection for the higher mileage engines. This time around I'm thinking of adding "Lucas" & see how it works, as I've heard some pretty good reports on it, just to see if it will prolong that oil breakdown, at mid change.
