Hello, this problem is due to a failing stepper motor. The stepper motor is the motor behind the gauge that controls the movement of the needle. When a stepper motor begins to go out it will cause the gauge needle to stick, skip around, stay at zero or max out on the gauge. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the stepper motor with a new one. While replacing one motor it is best to go ahead and replace them all as the others will go out in time as well. Your cluster will have one motor for each gauge. Here's a link to a page showing exactly how to replace a GM stepper motor and where to get the correct parts to do the job! My 05 Focus speedometer is wacky. All other gauges and systems work fine. The speedometer needle doesn't go to zero when vehicle stops moving.

Sounds like the speedometer is faulty. If the speed sensor were the problem, the odometer would not work correctly, the transmission would not shift correctly, and the check engine light would be on.

99 ford Taurus won't go over 35-40 mph, however speedometer reads 120 mph from start. Tranny seems fine and no check lights whatsoever.

Scan the vehicle for fault codes first. Sounds like you need to check the vehicle speed sensor signal into the speedometer. If that is ok then send the speedo head out for repair.

My speedometer on my 2004 chev tahoe reads 120 mph. Sometimes it is less but is never the correct speed I am going. What do I need? A cable or fuse??

First call your dealer. There is a free instrument cluster replacement recall, which may apply for your problem.

My speedometer reads speeds beyond 120 MPH when I am stopped. It gradually creaps up sometimes while driving. If I turn the ignition switch on and off several times it will graduall return to 0 and work...

gm had problems with that cluster, the most problems where with the impala and malibus, sometime they even get stuck at top speed even with car off, some of them can be reprogramed but others had to be replaced, ive done a few, call your dealer and ask if theres a recall in your area, good luck.
